Note — These exercises are intended for use with counters of some kind, – marbles, pebbles, kernels of corn, beans, or paper clips. The objects can be arranged in distinct groups, to represent each number indicated.

STEP 1
- Instructors display the table below.
- Children copy problems from the table, solve the problems, and write the answers.
STEP 2
- Instructors and children review the solutions.
- Children correct any mistakes.
- Special drill should be given to those combinations by which the addition of the digit carries the total into the ten next higher than the number to which the digit is added.
- Continue until children master all equations.
