A place to grow your relationship with God

The Church of Smyrna

The Church of Smyrna

This study comes from Revelation 2:8-11.

Jesus says,

  •  I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich)
  • I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the Synagogue of Satan.
  • Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days:
  • be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
  • He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches
  • He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

There are some words that need to be defined.

  • Jews: Strong’s G2453 – ioudaios
    • Ἰουδαῖος Ioudaîos, ee-oo-dah’-yos; from G2448 (in the sense of G2455 as a country); Judæan, i.e. belonging to Jehudah:—Jew(-ess), of Judæa.
  • Synagogue: Strong’s G4864 – synagōgē
    • συναγωγή synagōgḗ, soon-ag-o-gay’; from (the reduplicated form of) G4863; an assemblage of persons; specially, a Jewish “synagogue” (the meeting or the place); by analogy, a Christian church:—assembly, congregation, synagogue.
  • Satan: Strong’s G4567 – satanas
    • Σατανᾶς Satanâs, sat-an-as’; of Chaldee origin corresponding to G4566 (with the definite affix); the accuser, i.e. the devil:—Satan.
  • blasphemy: Strong’s G988 – blasphēmia
    • βλασφημία blasphēmía, blas-fay-me’-ah; from G989; vilification (especially against God):—blasphemy, evil speaking, railing.

This passage gives us a couple of lessons:

  1. Remember that when you are being tested, that it is only those who pass the test that receive the crown of life. Be faithful to God even unto death.
    • Romans 5:3-5 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
      • I am fully aware that most don’t see any glory while going through tribulations but remember that from tribulations you learn lessons that give you cause for hope. That doesn’t mean ask for tribulations or patience. It does mean that when we trust God and come through to the over side of the tribulation that you will have a testimony.
  2. Just because the person should be right with God, doesn’t mean that he or she is right with God. In the passage it says that they say they are Jews, and are not, but are the Synagogue of Satan. It has been I problem done through history that people will say that they are one thing and really be something else. Remember Matthew 7:21 Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. There are many wolves in sheep clothing.
