The Birth of the Church
1. THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY GHOST
Prior to Jesus’ ascension, He told his disciples not to begin their ministry yet but to wait in the city of Jerusalem until they were endued with power from on high.
- Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
- Isaiah 28:11-12 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, this is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
- The preaching of the gospel was to be done under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.
- Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you! and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
- Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you! and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
It was to start in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost. For more information, on The Day of Pentecost, see Understanding Pentecost: Significance and Celebrations.
2. THE UPPER ROOM
- 120 people were in the upper room.

- Acts 2 records the outpouring of the Holy Ghost
- Acts 2:1-3 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
- One of the miracles that took place in the upper room was when they were all filled with the
Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance.- Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance,
