Effective Bible Study Methods for Spiritual Growth

The Bible is the most powerful weapon that a Christian has. It is the Word of God. Remember that by the Word of God the entire universe was formed. One of the first things that the devil has ever done throughout history in every society was to separate the people from the word of God. He doesn’t always do this by banning the bible. Generally speaking, people will try all the harder to read that which is banned. Humans are naturally curious. Many will read that which is banned before anything else just to find out why it is banned. So, the devil in in many places simply causes the people to lose the desire to read and study God’s Word. Many people naturally have another problem. We like to do things the easy way possible. If there is a short cut, that is what people want to do. This devil uses this. He simply plants the idea that we don’t have to study the Word of God because:

  • we are not a preacher
  • we go to church
  • we are too busy
  • it is not required for salvation (this is not really true because without faith it is impossible to please God and faith cometh by hearing the Word of God)
  • we come from a Christian home

It is time for you to learn the greatest weapon you have in your walk with God. We are called to Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). God has called us to be ambassadors. As ambassadors of God, we need to know the instructions. The Bible is our instruction book.

There are many methods for studying the Bible. Here are some that I have successfully used.

  • Get a Bible Study. These are usually topic based. I have few on this site.
    • Exploring God’s Word: This Home Study explores the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, focusing on fundamental historical narratives. It includes an introduction to both the Old and New Testaments, covering key figures, events, and teachings. Additional content will be added in the upcoming months to enhance your understanding of biblical stories.
    • Old Testaments Survey: An Old Testament Survey involves analyzing each of the 39 books to identify their central themes and overall significance in the context of the Bible. It spans over 4,000 years and provides foundational understanding of the Old Covenants, essential for interpreting the New Testament. The Old Testament serves as a historical account of the Hebrew nation. Additional content will be added in the coming weeks.
    • The Eternity of God: The Eternity of God is a Bible study series exploring topics from creation to eternity. It includes discussions on salvation history, the nature of man, biblical prophecies, and key events in Christian doctrine, such as the resurrection and final judgment. Various parts can be studied in any sequence.
    • Principals of Prayer Bible Study: The Principles of Prayer is a Bible study series offered on this blog, focusing on various aspects of prayer. It starts with its definition and provides guidance on effective prayer. The lessons can be studied in any order and cover topics from types of prayer to corporate prayer and hindrances.
  • Word Study: This is where you take a scripture and look at a difficult word. You look and see other scriptures that contain the same word.
    • Blue Letter Bible: this is a good site for looking up scriptures. It gives you the original Hebrew or Greek word. It also gives you other scriptures that contains that word.
    • Bible Hub: This site is also helpful for Bible study.
  • Bible Mapping: This allows you to look at a scripture from many points of view. It has you studying difficult words, the context, the who, what, when, and where, and it helps you think about how to apply the verse. Below is a website with more instructions and a downloadable verse mapping Bible study tool.
  • Bible memory
    • set a verse or group of verses to music.
      • Many scriptures were originally written to be sung.
      • There are many songs already written based on scriptures. Many are written for children, but they can be good for adults too.
    • pick a verse per week or month and work on learning it.
