Note — These exercises are intended for use with counters of some kind, – marbles, pebbles, kernels of corn, beans, or paper clips. The objects can be arranged in distinct groups, to represent each number indicated. The children will need to copy the math problems into a notebook to work them.

STEP 1
- Instructors display the table below.
- Children copy problems from the table, solve the problems, and write the answers.
- Have the children look at each column individually and add just those numbers.
- Remind the children to carry where it is appropriate.
STEP 2
- Ask the children if they noticed any patterns.
- The pattern is the answers increase by 1 in the rows.
- Instructors and children review the solutions.
- Children correct any mistakes.
- Special drill should be given to those combinations by which the addition of the digit carries the total into the ten next higher than the number to which the digit is added.
- Continue until children master all equations.
