God’s Design for Men and Women in Love

🌿 Proper Relationships Between Men and Women

A Biblical Reflection with the Book of Proverbs & It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels

The old country classic It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels carries a message that still rings true today. The song tells the story of a woman who was faithful, trusting, and committed—yet deeply wounded by a man who forgot his vows and went looking for attention in the wrong places. Her heartbreak echoes a truth Scripture has warned us about for thousands of years.

The Bible—especially the book of Proverbs—speaks plainly about the dangers of unfaithfulness, wandering eyes, and foolish choices. God designed relationships to be built on honor, purity, and covenant love. When men or women step outside those boundaries, the consequences ripple far beyond themselves.

📖 Proverbs: Wisdom for Men and Women

1. Men are called to faithfulness and integrity.

Proverbs repeatedly warns men not to seek affection, excitement, or validation in places that destroy the soul.

  • “For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honeycomb… but her end is bitter as wormwood.”
    Proverbs 5:3–4
  • “Drink waters out of thine own cistern… Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.”
    Proverbs 5:15, 18

God’s Word is clear:
A man who chases the “wild side of life” is not only harming himself—he is harming his wife, his home, and his witness.

The song laments that “too many times married men think they’re still single.”
Proverbs would agree. A man who forgets his covenant invites destruction into his own house.

2. Women are not the root of the problem.

The song pushes back against the idea that women alone are to blame for broken homes. Scripture supports this truth.

Proverbs never teaches that women are the cause of men’s sin.
Instead, it teaches that each person is responsible before God.

  • “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts.”
    Proverbs 21:2
  • “A faithful man who can find?”
    Proverbs 20:6

The Bible does not excuse men who wander, nor does it place the weight of their choices on women.

3. Sin has consequences—always.

Whether it’s a man chasing temptation or a woman responding out of hurt, sin leaves a trail of brokenness.

  • Broken trust
  • Broken families
  • Broken hearts
  • Broken fellowship with God

Proverbs warns:

  • “He that committeth adultery… destroyeth his own soul.”
    Proverbs 6:32

The song’s message—that wounded hearts often come from someone else’s unfaithfulness—mirrors this biblical truth. Sin never stays small. It spreads, wounds, and destroys.

🌼 4. God’s Design Is Better

God created relationships to be places of safety, honor, and mutual devotion.

  • Men are called to lead with love, not selfishness.
  • Women are called to walk in respect, not fear.
  • Both are called to faithfulness, wisdom, and purity.

Proverbs paints a picture of a man who guards his heart, cherishes his wife, and walks in righteousness.
It also honors women of strength, dignity, and faithfulness.

When both walk in God’s wisdom, homes flourish.

🌟 Closing Reflection

The song reminds us that the world’s brokenness is not God’s doing.
It wasn’t God who created unfaithfulness, wandering hearts, or broken homes.

Sin did that.
Selfishness did that.
Ignoring God’s wisdom did that.

But God offers a better way—a path of faithfulness, honor, and covenant love.

May we be men and women who choose wisdom over wandering, commitment over carelessness, and righteousness over regret.
