🕊 Reflection: Growing in Spiritual Discernment

Spiritual discernment is the ability to recognize God’s voice, distinguish truth from deception, and perceive the difference between the Good Shepherd and the voices of false shepherds. Scripture teaches that not every voice, leader, or influence is from God. Some guide toward life; others lead toward destruction.

Zechariah 11 gives a sobering picture of the bad shepherd—one who abandons, devours, and misleads the flock. Jesus, by contrast, is the Good Shepherd whose voice brings life, peace, and safety.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27

Discernment begins with knowing His voice. The more we walk with Him, the more quickly we recognize when something does not sound like Him.

🌿 1. Discernment Begins with the Shepherd’s Voice

The Good Shepherd leads gently, truthfully, and consistently with Scripture. His voice brings clarity, not confusion; peace, not panic; conviction, not condemnation.

“He leadeth me beside the still waters… He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness.” — Psalm 23:2–3

The bad shepherd in Zechariah does the opposite—he neglects, wounds, and consumes the flock.

“He shall not visit those that be cut off… but he shall eat the flesh of the fat.” — Zechariah 11:16

Discernment means learning to recognize the difference.

🌿 2. Discernment Requires Testing What We Hear

Scripture calls believers to test every spirit, every teaching, and every influence.

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” — 1 John 4:1

The Word of God is the standard. The Holy Spirit is the guide. The character of Christ is the measure.

🌿 3. Discernment Protects Us from Deception

Zechariah warns of leaders who appear strong but are spiritually blind and powerless.

“Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! … his right eye shall be utterly darkened.” — Zechariah 11:17

Discernment keeps us from following voices that flatter, manipulate, or exploit.

Jesus said His sheep flee from the voice of strangers.

“A stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him.” — John 10:5

🌿 4. Discernment Grows Through Obedience

The more we obey the Shepherd’s voice, the clearer it becomes. Discernment is not only about identifying what is wrong—it is about faithfully following what is right.

“In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:6

🌿 Personal Reflection

  • What voices have the most influence in my life right now?
  • Do they lead me toward Christ or away from Him?
  • Am I spending enough time in Scripture to recognize the Shepherd’s voice?
  • Where might God be inviting me to grow in discernment?

🌿 Encouragement

The Good Shepherd does not leave His people confused. He leads. He speaks. He guides. When we stay close to Him, discernment becomes a natural overflow of relationship.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” — Psalm 23:6
