🌿 The One True God Among the “gods”
Scripture never shies away from the reality that spiritual beings exist—angels, fallen angels, and rebellious powers that nations once worshiped as “gods.” Yet the Bible is equally clear: none of them compare to the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth. They may be called “gods,” but they are created beings, not divine in essence, authority, or eternity.
“For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible…” — Deuteronomy 10:17
This does not mean there are multiple true gods. It means that whatever beings the nations feared or worshiped—whether idols or fallen spiritual powers—God stands infinitely above them. He is their Maker, their Judge, and the One they must answer to.
🕊️ 1. Scripture Acknowledges Other “gods,” but Not as Divine Equals
Psalm 82:1
God stands in the divine council and judges among the “gods.”
These “gods” are spiritual beings—created, limited, and accountable.
Psalm 96:5
“All the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.”
The Hebrew word for “idols” here can also mean “worthless things”—powerless compared to the Creator.
1 Corinthians 8:5–6
Paul acknowledges that there are “many gods and many lords” in the world’s understanding, but then he draws the line clearly:
“Yet for us there is but one God, the Father… and one Lord, Jesus Christ.”
Paul isn’t saying these beings are imaginary—only that they are not true gods. They are created powers, often behind idolatry, but utterly beneath the Lord.
🔥 2. Many of These “gods” Originated as Fallen Angels
Scripture connects idolatry with demonic beings:
Deuteronomy 32:17
“They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not.”
The word “devils” here refers to shedim—spiritual beings behind pagan worship.
Psalm 106:37
Israel “sacrificed their sons and daughters unto devils.”
Again, the Bible links false gods with fallen spiritual beings.
Revelation 12:9
The great dragon—Satan—leads a host of fallen angels.
These rebellious beings became the spiritual powers behind false worship.
So when Scripture speaks of “gods,” it is often referring to fallen angels, rebellious powers, or demonic beings that deceived nations into worshiping them.
👑 3. Yet God Alone Is the Creator, Sovereign, and True God
The Bible draws a sharp contrast:
Isaiah 45:5
“I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.”
Isaiah 44:6
“I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”
Jeremiah 10:10–11
The Lord is the true God, the living God, the everlasting King.
All other “gods” will perish.
These passages don’t deny the existence of spiritual beings. They deny their deity. Only the Lord is uncreated, eternal, sovereign, and worthy of worship.
🌟 4. God’s Supremacy Over All Spiritual Powers
Colossians 1:16
All thrones, dominions, rulers, and authorities—every spiritual being—were created by Christ and for Christ.
Philippians 2:9–11
Every knee—in heaven, on earth, and under the earth—will bow to Jesus.
Revelation 19:16
He is “King of kings and Lord of lords.”
This title echoes Deuteronomy 10:17 and shows that Jesus shares the same divine supremacy.
✨ Summary
The Bible acknowledges the existence of other spiritual beings—some loyal, some fallen—who were wrongly worshiped as “gods.” But Scripture is unwavering:
There is only one true God.
He is the Creator of all things, the Judge of all spiritual powers, and the One before whom every being will bow.
The “gods” of the nations are created, limited, and often fallen angels.
The Lord alone is eternal, sovereign, and worthy of worship.
