Brothers, who stand behind pulpits, this is written not in anger but in grief.
When you use MalachiâŻ3, âGive, and it shall be given unto you,â or âYou have not because you give notâ to pressure people into giving, you twist the Word meant to free souls into one that binds them with guilt.
The Lord never asked His shepherds to manipulate His flock. He asked them to feed it.
đ The Truth of the Texts
- MalachiâŻ3 was a covenant rebuke to Israel, not a fundraising formula for the church. It addressed agricultural tithes withheld from Levites and the poorânot money withheld from pastors.
- LukeâŻ6:38 speaks of mercy and forgiveness, not financial transactions. It calls believers to generosity of spirit, not to âseedâfaithâ schemes.
- JamesâŻ4:2 says âyou have not because you ask not,â not âbecause you give not.â It condemns selfish motives, not small offerings.
To use these verses as levers of guilt is to misrepresent the heart of God.
đď¸ The Heart of Giving
True giving is voluntary, cheerful, and Spiritâled.
It flows from gratitude, not fear.
It builds community, not empires.
It honors Christ, not the preacher.
When leaders turn giving into a transactionââgive to get,â âsow to reap,â âprove your faith with your walletââthey trade grace for manipulation. That is not ministry; it is merchandising.
âď¸ A Call to Repentance and Restoration
If you have taught these things, repentânot to shame yourself, but to restore integrity.
Return to the simplicity of Christ:
âFreely you have received; freely give.â (MatthewâŻ10:8)
Teach your people to give because they love, not because they fear lack.
Remind them that Godâs blessing is not boughtâit is bestowed.
And remember that the shepherdâs calling is not to collect but to care.
đż A Personal Word
Some of you have even said, âIâm storing up treasure in heaven â what about you?â
But that, too, has become a tool to squeeze offerings out of tenderâhearted people who only want to please God.
Heavenly treasure is not earned by giving money to ministries; it is stored up through obedience, mercy, humility, and truth.
As for me, I am storing up treasure in heaven â what about you?
Not by manipulating Godâs people, but by walking in integrity.
Not by demanding offerings, but by honoring Christ.
Not by building my kingdom, but by serving His.
Every act of faithfulness, every refusal to twist Scripture, every moment of honest shepherding â these are the deposits that matter in eternity.
When the Lord returns, may He find shepherds who gave freely, taught faithfully, and loved purely.
đż Closing Appeal
The gospel does not need marketing; it needs mercy.
The church does not need manipulation; it needs truth.
And the people of God do not need pressure; they need peace.
Preach Christ crucified, not commerce sanctified.
Feed His sheep, and trust the Lord of the harvest to provide.
