💔 A Word to Preachers Who Pressure God’s People

Illustration depicting a biblical theme contrasting the concept of mandatory tithes with voluntary offerings. Features elements like a cross, sheep, crops, and a shepherd, along with text highlighting scriptures from John and Peter.

Brothers, who stand behind pulpits, this is written not in anger but in grief.
When you use Malachi 3, “Give, and it shall be given unto you,” or “You have not because you give not” to pressure people into giving, you twist the Word meant to free souls into one that binds them with guilt.

The Lord never asked His shepherds to manipulate His flock. He asked them to feed it.

📖 The Truth of the Texts

  • Malachi 3 was a covenant rebuke to Israel, not a fundraising formula for the church. It addressed agricultural tithes withheld from Levites and the poor—not money withheld from pastors.
  • Luke 6:38 speaks of mercy and forgiveness, not financial transactions. It calls believers to generosity of spirit, not to “seed‑faith” schemes.
  • James 4:2 says “you have not because you ask not,” not “because you give not.” It condemns selfish motives, not small offerings.

To use these verses as levers of guilt is to misrepresent the heart of God.

🕊️ The Heart of Giving

True giving is voluntary, cheerful, and Spirit‑led.
It flows from gratitude, not fear.
It builds community, not empires.
It honors Christ, not the preacher.

When leaders turn giving into a transaction—“give to get,” “sow to reap,” “prove your faith with your wallet”—they trade grace for manipulation. That is not ministry; it is merchandising.

⚖️ A Call to Repentance and Restoration

If you have taught these things, repent—not to shame yourself, but to restore integrity.
Return to the simplicity of Christ:

“Freely you have received; freely give.” (Matthew 10:8)

Teach your people to give because they love, not because they fear lack.
Remind them that God’s blessing is not bought—it is bestowed.
And remember that the shepherd’s calling is not to collect but to care.

🌿 A Personal Word

Some of you have even said, “I’m storing up treasure in heaven — what about you?”
But that, too, has become a tool to squeeze offerings out of tender‑hearted people who only want to please God.
Heavenly treasure is not earned by giving money to ministries; it is stored up through obedience, mercy, humility, and truth.

As for me, I am storing up treasure in heaven — what about you?
Not by manipulating God’s people, but by walking in integrity.
Not by demanding offerings, but by honoring Christ.
Not by building my kingdom, but by serving His.

Every act of faithfulness, every refusal to twist Scripture, every moment of honest shepherding — these are the deposits that matter in eternity.

When the Lord returns, may He find shepherds who gave freely, taught faithfully, and loved purely.

🌿 Closing Appeal

The gospel does not need marketing; it needs mercy.
The church does not need manipulation; it needs truth.
And the people of God do not need pressure; they need peace.

Preach Christ crucified, not commerce sanctified.
Feed His sheep, and trust the Lord of the harvest to provide.
