🌊 Floating vs. Sinking

🎯 Objective

Make a prediction (hypothesis) and then test which items float and which items sink.

🧩 Materials

  • A sink or bathtub filled with water
  • Several water‑safe objects such as:
    • Silverware
    • Plastic toys
    • Plastic bottle caps
    • Legos
    • Print out
  • Instructors: help children choose a mix of items that will float and sink.

🔬 Procedure

  1. Prepare the Test Area:
Fill a sink or bathtub with water. Gather all the water‑resistant items.
  2. Make a Hypothesis:
Before testing, guess which objects will float and which will sink.
  3. Sort the Items:
Based on your guesses, divide the objects into two groups:
    • “Float” group
    • “Sink” group
  4. Test Your Hypothesis:
Drop each object into the water one at a time.
Observe what happens — does it float or sink?
    Record your results.

🧠 Reflection

  • Were your guesses correct?
  • What do the floating objects have in common?
  • What do the sinking objects have in common?
  • What might make an object float or sink?
