🕊️ A Teaching on Rahab: The Faith That Saved a Family

An illustration depicting Rahab standing in a window of a stone wall, holding a red cord, with her family visible behind her. In the background, ruins of collapsing walls and a sunset sky create a dramatic scene.

🌿 1. A City in Fear — and a Woman Who Believed

Jericho was terrified.
They had heard what God did at the Red Sea.
They had heard how Israel defeated kings in the wilderness.
But Rahab did more than fear — she believed.

She told the spies:

“I know that the LORD has given you the land.”
— Joshua 2:9

Her faith began before she saw a single miracle with her own eyes.

🌊 2. The Jordan River Parts — All the Way Back to Adam

When Israel approached the Jordan, God repeated a Red Sea–sized miracle.

Joshua 3:16 says the waters “stood and rose up in a heap very far away at Adam.”

This wasn’t a small opening.
It was a massive wall of water, visible from far away.

Jericho sat on high ground.
Rahab’s house was built into the wall.

Her family would have:

  • seen the river stop
  • watched the water pile up
  • realized Israel’s God was real
  • understood judgment was coming
  • recognized mercy was being offered through Rahab

Their faith began to awaken.

🏠 3. Rahab’s Family Responds in Faith

Rahab told her family:

  • “Come into my house.”
  • “Stay here.”
  • “Trust the God who is coming.”

They had a choice.

They could have stayed in their own homes.
They could have trusted Jericho’s walls.
They could have dismissed Rahab’s testimony.

But they didn’t.

They entered her house — a house built into the very wall that would soon collapse.

That was faith.

And they stayed there for nearly three weeks.

4. The Timeline of Their Waiting Faith

From Scripture, we can trace the days:

  • Day 0: Israel crosses the Jordan
    • (Joshua 4:19 — on the 10th day of the first month)
  • Days 1–3: Healing from circumcision
    • (Joshua 5:2–9)
  • Days 4–11: Passover + Unleavened Bread (8 days)
    • (Joshua 5:10 — 14th day of the month)
  • Day 11 or 12: Joshua meets the Commander of the Lord
    • (Joshua 5:13–15)
  • Days 12–18: Seven days of marching
    • (Joshua 6:3–4)
  • Day 18 or 19: The walls fall
    • (Joshua 6:20)

Rahab’s family remained in her house for about 18–19 days.

Nearly three weeks of:

  • watching Israel camp
  • seeing the Jordan still parted
  • hearing Jericho panic
  • watching Israel march silently
  • trusting the scarlet cord
  • choosing obedience
  • choosing faith

Their faith wasn’t a moment.
It was endurance.

🔴 5. The Scarlet Cord: A Sign of Mercy

Rahab tied the scarlet cord in her window immediately.

It symbolized:

  • obedience
  • covenant
  • covering
  • protection
  • and a foreshadowing of Christ’s blood

Where the scarlet cord hung, judgment could not enter.

🧱 6. When the Walls Fell — Her House Stood

Jericho’s walls collapsed under the power of God.

But one section remained.

One window.
One cord.
One house.
One family gathered under faith.

God does not destroy what He has redeemed.

Rahab’s house stood because God held it up.

🌳 7. A Family Saved — and Planted

Rahab and her family were brought safely out and placed among Israel.

They didn’t return to Jericho.
They stepped into a new identity.

From Rahab came:

  • Boaz
  • Obed
  • Jesse
  • David
  • and ultimately Jesus Christ

A house that should have fallen became the birthplace of redemption.

💛 The Heart of the Teaching

Rahab believed before she saw.
Her family believed because they saw.
Both kinds of faith are honored by God.

A believing woman opened the door.
A believing family walked through it.
And God saved them all.
