✨ Devotional: Take Me Back to My First Love

There are moments in the Christian life when a quiet ache rises in the soul—an ache that whispers, “I used to walk closer than this.” It’s not condemnation. It’s not rejection. It’s the tender voice of Jesus calling us back to the place where love first awakened.

The church of Ephesus knew this ache. They were faithful, hardworking, doctrinally sound… yet Jesus said:

“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works.”

—Revelation 2:4–5

They hadn’t lost their faith. They had lost their warmth. Their wonder. Their first love.

Andraé Crouch’s song “Take Me Back” becomes a prayer that echoes this same longing. When he sings, “Take me back, dear Lord, to the place where I first received You,” he is giving voice to the same invitation Jesus gave Ephesus:
Come home to the love that once burned bright.

When We Feel Far Away

The song confesses, “I feel that I’m so far from You, Lord… but still I hear You calling me.”

Distance happens quietly.
Not through rebellion, but through distraction.
Not through hatred, but through hurry.
Not through denial, but through drift.

Yet even when we feel far, His voice still reaches us.
He calls not with anger, but with mercy.

Remember. Repent. Return.

Jesus gave Ephesus a simple, three-step path back:

1. Remember

Remember the tenderness you once felt.
Remember the joy of early obedience.
Remember the sweetness of simple faith.

2. Repent

Not a harsh word—
but a turning word.
A word that means, “Come back to Me.”

3. Return to the first works

The small things.
The quiet things.
The things that once made your heart burn.

Prayer without rushing.
Scripture without pressure.
Worship without performance.
Obedience without fear.

These are the “first works” that restore first love.

💔The Cry of a Hungry Heart

The song pleads:

“Renew my faith, restore my joy, then dry my weeping eyes.”

This is the cry of a heart that knows:
Blessings are not enough without closeness.
Activity is not enough without affection.
Knowledge is not enough without love.

God does not shame this cry—He honors it.
He meets it.
He heals it.

We Cannot Make It Alone

The song admits:

“I’ve tried so hard to make it all alone… I need Your help just to make it home.”

This is the turning point.
Not strength.
Not striving.
Not perfection.

Dependence.

The moment we stop trying to “make it alone,”
we find the Shepherd who has been following us all along.

🙏🏽A Prayer for Today

Lord, take me back.
Not to a place of immaturity,
but to a place of intimacy.
Back to the joy of early mornings with You.
Back to the tenderness that once softened my heart.
Back to the simplicity of trusting You without fear.
Back to the love that first changed my life.

Renew my faith.
Restore my joy.
Revive my first love.

Amen.
