God’s Word: Sweet Revelations and Bitter Responsibilities

Illustration depicting three biblical figures: Daniel with scrolls, Paul pointing and holding a book, and John reading from a scroll. Background features a cityscape and an angel. There are labels identifying each figure and a directional arrow indicating a progression from 'Hidden for Ages' to 'Now Revealed'.

I. Ezekiel’s Commission — Eating the Scroll (Ezekiel 3:1–3)

A. The Command to Eat the Scroll

  • “Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll…” (Ezek. 3:1)

B. Internalizing God’s Word

  • Ezekiel must fill his belly with the scroll (Ezek. 3:3).
  • God’s word must be taken in before it can be spoken out.

C. Sweet as Honey

  • “It was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.” (Ezek. 3:3)
  • God’s revelation is sweet, pure, and life‑giving (Ps. 19:10; Ps. 119:103).

D. The Bitter Mission

  • Though sweet to receive, the message is one of judgment (Ezek. 3:4–11).
  • Sweet revelation + bitter responsibility.

II. John’s Commission — Eating the Little Book (Revelation 10:8–11)

A. The Angel Gives the Little Book

  • John is told: “Take it, and eat it up.” (Rev. 10:9)

B. Sweet in the Mouth

  • “It was in my mouth sweet as honey.” (Rev. 10:10)
  • God’s truth is always sweet to receive.

C. Bitter in the Belly

  • “…but as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.” (Rev. 10:10)
  • The coming judgments (Rev. 8–9; Rev. 16) produce sorrow.

D. Renewed Prophetic Commission

  • “Thou must prophesy again before many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.” (Rev. 10:11)
  • Ezekiel’s pattern is repeated but expanded to the whole world.

III. Daniel’s Sealed Vision — The Timeline of Redemption (Daniel 9:24)

A. The Seventy Weeks Decree

  • “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people…” (Dan. 9:24)

B. Six Purposes of the Seventy Weeks

  1. Finish the transgression
  2. Make an end of sins
  3. Make reconciliation for iniquity
  4. Bring in everlasting righteousness
  5. Seal up the vision and prophecy
  6. Anoint the Most Holy

C. The Vision Is Sealed

  • Daniel is repeatedly told his visions are closed and sealed (Dan. 12:4, 9).
  • The full understanding is reserved for the time of the end.

IV. Revelation’s Unsealed Prophecy — The Time Is at Hand (Revelation 22:10)

A. The Direct Reversal of Daniel

  • “Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book.” (Rev. 22:10)
  • Daniel: Seal it
  • John: Do not seal it

B. Why the Change?

  • The Lamb has opened the seals (Rev. 5–6).
  • The mystery of God is about to be finished (Rev. 10:7).
  • The end‑time events are now unfolding.

C. Revelation Is the Unveiling

  • The Greek word apokalypsis means unveiling, uncovering, revealing.

V. Paul’s Mystery — Hidden for Ages, Now Revealed (Ephesians 3:1–9)

A. The Mystery Revealed by Revelation

  • “By revelation He made known unto me the mystery.” (Eph. 3:3)
  • “The mystery which hath been hid from ages…” (Col. 1:26)

B. What Is the Mystery?

  • “That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body…” (Eph. 3:6)
  • Jew + Gentile = one new man in Christ (Eph. 2:14–16).

C. The Mystery of the Gospel

  • “My gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery…” (Rom. 16:25)

D. The Mystery and the End of the Age

  • Revelation 10:7: “The mystery of God should be finished.”
  • Paul’s revealed mystery is completed in Revelation’s unsealed prophecy.

E. Additional Mystery Passages

  • The resurrection/rapture mystery (1 Cor. 15:51–52)
  • Christ in you, the hope of glory (Col. 1:27)
  • The blindness of Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles (Rom. 11:25)

VI. The Unified Prophetic Pattern

A. Ezekiel — Eat the scroll (sweet) → Speak judgment (bitter)

B. Daniel — Vision sealed until the end

C. Paul — Mystery revealed in the gospel

D. John — Eat the book (sweet → bitter) → Prophesy again

E. Revelation — Prophecy unsealed because the time is at hand

VII. Application for Today

A. God’s Word Is Still Sweet and Bitter

  • Sweet to receive (Ps. 119:103)
  • Bitter when it confronts sin, judgment, and repentance

B. God Still Calls His People to Internalize His Word

  • Before we speak, we must eat (Jer. 15:16).

C. The Mystery Is Still Being Completed

  • The gospel is still going to all nations (Matt. 24:14).
  • The fullness of the Gentiles is still coming in (Rom. 11:25).

D. The Unsealed Book Calls Us to Read, Hear, and Keep

  • Revelation 1:3 — “Blessed is he that readeth…”
