Borrowed Authority and Naked Religion

Acts 19:13–16

There are some passages in Scripture that read like they were written for right now, for our churches, for our generation.
Acts 19 is one of them.

Because if we’re honest, some churches today couldn’t discern their way out of a hailstorm.
They’ve got programs, committees, lights, sound, livestreams, and slogans…
but no power, no authority, no discernment, and no Holy Ghost fire.

And Acts 19 gives us a picture of what happens when people try to do God’s work without God’s Spirit.

I. “Jesus Whom Paul Preacheth” — The Danger of Secondhand Faith

The sons of Sceva tried to cast out a demon by saying:

“We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.”

They didn’t know Jesus.
They only knew about Him.
They had borrowed language, borrowed authority, borrowed religion.

This is the first warning:

  • You can’t cast out what you fellowship with
  • You can’t walk in authority you don’t live under
  • You can’t use Jesus’ name like a magic phrase

Secondhand faith has no power.

A church can shout Jesus’ name all day long, but if it doesn’t know Him, obey Him, and walk with Him, the spiritual realm is unmoved.

II. “Jesus I Know, and Paul I Know…” — Hell Keeps Records

The demon’s response is chilling:

“Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?”

Hell recognized:

  • Jesus — the Son of God
  • Paul — a man full of the Holy Ghost
  • But not these religious performers

Hell knows:

  • who walks in holiness
  • who walks in obedience
  • who walks in truth
  • who walks in the Spirit

And hell also knows who’s just playing church.

Some churches today are known in their community…
but not known in heaven.
And certainly not feared in hell.

III. “The Man Leaped on Them” — When Religion Meets Reality

The demon-possessed man attacked them, stripped them, beat them, and sent them running naked and wounded.

That’s what happens when:

  • churches imitate instead of discern
  • leaders perform instead of pray
  • ministries copy instead of consecrate
  • people use Jesus’ name without Jesus’ life

Naked religion is exposed religion.

It has:

  • no covering
  • no authority
  • no discernment
  • no protection

It looks spiritual until the real battle shows up.

IV. The Modern Application — Why This Matters Today

Many churches today are repeating the sons of Sceva:

  • They use Jesus’ name but don’t know His voice
  • They preach Paul’s words but don’t live Paul’s life
  • They imitate spiritual gifts without spiritual fruit
  • They try to cast out darkness while living in compromise
  • They shout, sing, and stage‑craft without discernment

And the spiritual realm answers back:

“Who are you?”

Because authority doesn’t come from:

  • microphones
  • titles
  • platforms
  • buildings
  • programs
  • emotional hype

Authority comes from relationship, obedience, and holiness.

V. The Call — Become a Church Hell Recognizes

We don’t need more sons of Sceva.
We need more Pauls.

We need:

  • churches that pray
  • believers that discern
  • pastors that walk in holiness
  • saints that know the Shepherd’s voice
  • people who don’t borrow authority — they carry it

The question today isn’t:

“Do you go to church?”
or
“Do you know about Jesus?”

The question is:

Does hell know your name?

Not because you’re loud…
but because you’re submitted.
Not because you’re talented…
but because you’re obedient.
Not because you’re religious…
but because you’re His.

VI. Closing Appeal

The sons of Sceva ran out naked and wounded.
But Paul walked in victory, authority, and discernment.

The difference wasn’t personality.
It wasn’t education.
It wasn’t background.

It was relationship.

And that’s the invitation today:

Stop borrowing someone else’s faith.
Stop imitating someone else’s walk.
Stop depending on someone else’s anointing.

Know Him for yourself.
Walk with Him for yourself.
Carry His authority for yourself.

Because when you truly belong to Jesus…
hell knows it.
