Easy Basic Biscuit Recipe for All Occasions

Basic Biscuits
This is a basic biscuit recipe. To this recipe you can add cinnamon and raisins for cinnamon raisin biscuits. Add some garlic and shape the dough into bread sticks and then paint them with melted butter mixed with a little garlic and you will have garlic bread. Use cookie cutters to shape the dough and the possibilities are endless.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Self-Rising Flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • About 3/4 cup milk (if there is a lot of humidity in the air or it is raining, start with 1/2 cup milk.)

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 450°F.
  2. In large bowl, cut shortening into flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. With a fork, stir in enough milk to form a soft dough or until dough pulls away from sides of bowl.
  4. Turn dough onto lightly floured board or pastry cloth; knead just until smooth. Roll
    dough to 12-inch thickness; cut with floured 2-inch round cutter.
  5. Place biscuits on ungreased baking sheet.
  6. Bake at 450°F for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Makes 12 to 14 biscuits.

Variation: For Old Fashioned Buttermilk Biscuits follow recipe for Basic Biscuits except substitute 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons buttermilk for milk and sift 1/4 teaspoon baking soda with flour.
