A Guide to Common Cooking Terms and Techniques
Here are some general cooking terms that are frequently used in recipes.

| Bake | Cook in the oven |
| Beat | Mix fast with beater or spoon |
| Blend | Mix ingredients until they are smooth |
| Boil | Cook until liquid is so hot it bubbles hard and steams |
| Broil | Cook by direct heat. (You can use the broiler section of the oven. |
| Brush | Spread on the ingredient thinly with a brush |
| Chop | Cut food in pieces with a knife or chopper |
| Combine | Mix ingredients together |
| Core | Remove the stem and seeds |
| Cream | Beat shortening and sugar until they are well mixed and fluffy |
| Cube | Cut into 1/4 to 1/2-inch squares |
| Dice | Cut food into very small cubes |
| Dot | Drop bits of butter, cheese, or other food here and there over the food |
| Fold | Mix ingredients gently with a rubber spatula, whisk, or spoon. Cut down through mixture, across the bottom of the bowl, up and over the top, close to the surface of the mixture. Do this over and over. |
| Fry | Cook in hot fat. |
| Garnish | Decorate food-for example, a cherry on top of ice cream, or a sprig of parsley on top of potatoes. |
| Grate | Scrape food against a grater, as in grating a carrot. |
| Grease | Spread shortening evenly on the bottom and sides of pan. |
| Melt | Turn butter or margarine into a liquid by heating. |
| Mince | Chop or cut food into tiny pieces, as in mincing an onion. |
| Mix | Stir ingredients together. |
| Pare | Cut away the outside covering of fruits and vegetables. |
| Peel | Strip off the outer covering, such as peeling a banana. |
| Pit | Take seeds or pits out of fruit |
| Shred | Cut food into very strips, think about shredded cheese |
| Sift | Put dry ingredients, such as flour and baking powder through a sifter or large strainer |
| Simmer | Cook food over a very low heat |
| Stir | Mix ingredients lightly, such as tossing a salad |
| Whip | Beat eggs and cream with an eggbeater or mixer until light and fluffy |
