The Children’s Six Minutes: What the Trees said to Me

WHAT THE TREES SAID TO ME

Across the street from my home is a large and beautiful park. It has inviting, winding paths, great quantities of flowers and many varieties of trees. Early one summer day, before most people were up, I strolled through the park. I thought I was all alone, but suddenly I heard a voice, “Stand erect. Do not walk with stooping shoulders. Head up, shoulders back!” Now I confess I was walking, and thinking as I walked, with shoulders bent and head forward. At once I straightened up and looked about to see who was speaking. It was the voice of a pine tree, growing hard by the path, tall and straight as a plumb line. “Thank you,” I said to the pine.

No sooner had I left the pine, and was again deep in thought, when I heard another voice. “Be courteous, you can never accomplish anything by scolding, insulting or driving people. Be fair and just. Be like Christ, a Christian gentleman.” Now who in the world is speaking to me? I looked everywhere and there was not the sign of a person in all the park. “Here I am,” the voice said. I looked and there, right before me, was a graceful elm tree, smiling and courteously bowing low to me. “I shall try and heed your word,” I said.

Going on my way I was no longer absorbed in thought, for I knew that other trees would have something to say. Sure enough, “Be steadfast,” I heard. What tree could that be? I should have known at once. The maple, of course.

Now the white birch beckons. How its face shines in the light of the early morning! But dark or light I can distinguish it from all its fellows. Always white of face and clean of life. So, I hear it say, “Be clean.”

Turning my steps homeward I said to the kindly trees, “Good-by, and thank you. I shall never forget this morning’s walk.”

MEMORY VERSE, Isaiah 61: 3

“To give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”

MEMORY HYMN

“Into the woods my Master went.”

The Meaning of Tattoos: History and Beliefs

Meaning of the word:

  • The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word tautau, meaning “to mark”. Tattoo means “pigment design inlaid under the skin,” 1769 (noun and verb, both first attested in writing of Capt. Cook), from a Polynesian noun (such as Tahitian and Samoan tatau, Marquesan tatu “puncture, mark made on skin”).

Leviticus 19:28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.

  • marks: Strong’s H7085 – qaʿăqaʿfrom the same as H6970; an incision or gash:— mark.

What Satanic people say:

  • Anton Szandor LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan took a stance on this subject – “Tattooing and piercing are basically forbidden by the Bible in the book of Leviticus, and most of the world is ruled by Biblical religious beliefs—even Africa now. I want to encourage anything that’s a statement against Christianity, because over the last 500 years Christian missionaries systematically destroyed virtually all of the world’s diverse cultures, making the world a much less interesting place.” (Modern Primitives: An Investigation of Contemporary Adornment and Ritual by V. Vale)
    • Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan and author of The Satanic Bible, called tattoos a “statement against Christianity” and, as far back as 1990 claimed that Satanism is behind every tattoo – be it a rose or a dragon.
  • There are 7 Fundamental Tenets in the Satanic Religion. They are shown below.

Take a look at Tenet 3. Notice how it goes directly against the Word of God. According to the Bible your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

What others say:

  • Steve Gilbert’s book, A Tattoo History: A Source Book, notes that in ancient times,
“The actual tattooing process, which involved complex ritual and taboos, could only be done by priests and was associated with beliefs which were secrets known only to members of the priestly caste. …

The Bible tells in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. Tattoos have the appearance of evil.

How tattooing is Done:

Tattooing involves placing ink into the dermis layer of the skin with a needle. If a tattoo artist does not follow appropriate safety guidelines, there is the possibility of transmitting bloodborne viruses, such as hepatitis C. Below is a video about tattoos that is interesting to say the least.

Do you really think it is a good idea to purposely damage your body?

Do you think that getting a tattoo is pleasing to God?

Do you really think that tattoos can be redeemed and made good?

Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; The mountains shall drip with sweet wine, And all the hills shall flow with it. I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. I will plant them in their land, And no longer shall they be pulled up From the land I have given them,” Says the LORD your God.

Christ in the Book of Amos

  • In the Book of Amos, there are several connections to Jesus:
    • Similar Backgrounds: Both Amos and Jesus came from humble beginnings and were seen as outsiders with important messages for the people.
      • Shepherd
        • John 10:4,5(NKJV) And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
    • Servant Leadership: Amos lived a life devoted to service, paralleling Jesus’ teachings and lifestyle.
    • Burden Bearers: Amos expressed deep concern for the sins of the people, similar to how Jesus bore the burdens of humanity.
    • Fulfillment of Prophecy: The messages in Amos point towards the coming of Jesus, who fulfills the intentions of God for humanity.
  • These connections illustrate how the themes in Amos resonate with the life and mission of Jesus.

The Impossible Dream

Many years ago, I had a dream after praying and asking Jesus what I should major in at college. I dreamed that Jesus came to my room and sit on my bed. He came telling me what he wanted me to do. In the dream after Jesus sat down on the bed, I sat up to listen to what he had to say. He told me that I was to teach his children how to read. I asked where I was to teach His children. He said in the public, private, and in the church. After that the dream ended.

The next day, I went to register for college. My initial plan was to pursue computer science, but after that dream, I chose elementary education instead. I’ve taught in both public and private schools, as well as Sunday school. Now, I feel led by Jesus to share Bible studies here and create lesson plans to support homeschooling parents in teaching their children.

It seems impossible to think that Jesus came to me in a dream telling me to teach His children. However, I know what I dreamed. The Dream just as rule to me today as it was all those years ago.

Understanding Joel’s Prophecy: Judgment and Grace

Joel 2:12,13(NKJV) Now, therefore,” says the LORD, “Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. So, rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.

And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also, upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

    • In the book of Joel, it talks about God’s final judgement and rule. Jesus is the one who will be ruling and judging.
      • Revelation 19:11-16(NKJV) Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

The Children’s Six Minutes: Good Advice

GOOD ADVICE

Most of us, men and women as well as girls and boys, do not take kindly to advice. We very much prefer that people keep their advice to themselves. There are times, however, when we are compelled to listen to advice, because of the source. Here is a bit of advice that commands our attention. It is from the great English novelist, Charles Dickens.

Charles Dickens’ youngest boy, Edward, left home when he was sixteen years of age and went to Australia. His father wrote him a parting letter, which is worth while for all boys, whether or no they leave home. In that letter the great Dickens said,

“I put a New Testament among your books for the very same reasons and with the very same hopes that made me write an easy account of it for you when you were a little child. Because it is the best book that ever was or ever will be in the world. And because it teaches you the best lessons by which any human creature who tries to be truthful and faithful to duty can possibly be guided. As your brothers have gone away, one by one, I have written to each such words as I am now writing to you and have entreated them all to guide themselves by this book, putting aside the interpretations and inventions of men. Never abandon the wholesome practice of saying your own private prayers, night and morning. I have never abandoned it myself, and I know the comfort of it.”

Now that we are done reading this letter it does not sound like advice at all, does it. It is all so wholesome and sturdy that we feel like speaking right out loud, “Thank you, Mr. Dickens, thank you very much.”

MEMORY VERSE, Psalm 119: 9

“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his ways? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.”

MEMORY HYMN

“Lamp of our feet.”

Lust and Its Role in Conflict According to the Bible

Where does war come from? The answer is in the Bible. Look at what James 4:1-2 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?  Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

Galatians 5:19-21 lists the fruit of the flesh. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. War comes from lust and leads to killing, wrath, and strife. It produces hate.

Jesus has commanded us to love one another. Look at what Jesus says in John 13:34-35. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. This means that the world will recognize us (Christians) by our love for others. Matthew 5:43-48 says, “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” Remember 1 Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity (love) shall cover the multitude of sins.

If people could stop lusting and learn to love one another, war would become a thing of the past. I am fully aware that is not possible on this side of heaven in mankind’s fallen state. However, I also know that Christians are called to be salt and light to a lost world. We are called to show the world the love of God. The world is supposed to notice that there is a major difference in how we treat each other and the rest of the world.

There is an old song that ask the question “War: What is it good for?” The answer is “Absolutely Nothing”. I have attached the song in case you want to hear it.

Exploring the Four Meanings of the Psalms of Ascent

The Psalms of Ascent is also called the Psalms of degrees in the King James Bible. The Psalms of Ascent are Psalms 120-134. There are four different thoughts as to the original meanings and applications. It is possible that at various times all four applications were used. Here are the four thoughts for you to ponder.

  • Ascending from Babylon to Jerusalem
    • They could have been the songs sung as the people returned to Jerusalem. The wording in Ezra 7:9 gives us this idea because it talks about going up or ascending.
      • Ezra 7:9 For upon the first day of the first month began he to go up from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
  • 15 Steps of the temple on which worshippers sang these hymns. It would be one Psalm per step going up into the temple.
  • Literary Reference: the Psalms are written in a well denoted ascending order of thoughts and moods.
    • Here is a list of the Psalms with the main ideas.
      • 120: A Cry of Distress
      • 121: God’s Keeping Power
      • 122: Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem
      • 123: Plea for the Mercy of God
      • 124: God is on our Side
      • 125: A Hymn of Security
      • 126: Sow in tears…. Reap in Joy
      • 127: Children are God’s Heritage
      • 128: Blessing on the House of the God Fearing
      • 129: Plea of the Persecuted
      • 130: “My Soul waited for the Lord”
      • 131: A Psalm of Humility
      • 132: Trust in the God of David
      • 133: The Preciousness of Unity
      • 134: Bless the Lord, All you Servants
  • Trice Yearly trip to Jerusalem
    • It does not matter where you start from, you have to go up geographically to get from any of the surrounding areas to Jerusalem. Therefore, the ascent is a physical ascent to Jerusalem.
    • This view has the most to commend it. These Psalms have become known as the “Pilgrim Psalms” sung by those making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
    • I wonder if the idea didn’t start with Ezra and then became the songs that everyone sung when going to Jerusalem.

The Children’s Six Minutes: God’s Clock

GOD’S CLOCK

Do you own a watch? If you do not now you will some day. I have a friend whose watch came to him in this wise. His father said to him, “When you graduate from High School I will give you a watch.”

Is there a “town clock” where you live? Is it dependable? Do men set their watches by it? Do people, passing it, glance up to see if they are late? In the village where I began my ministry the Baptist tower held the town clock. I lived but a few doors away. I went to bed by it. I studied by it. I was wakened by it. Even now, and many years have passed since then, I can hear its clear bell strike the hours.

The strangest clock I ever saw was in China. I went up the West River to the city of Canton. I was carried through the narrow, smelly, crowded streets to the top of a little hill at the city’s edge. There, on the very tip-top I saw the “Water Clock.” I read, “This water clock is a most ancient, authentic, celebrated and sacred relic of Kwong Tung Province, over 1,300 years old. It was erected on the top story of the north Worshiping Tower which was built by Chin To, King of the South of China.”

It was a strange, crude affair, run by water. I stood and looked at it and thought, “This clock was running when George Washington was president; it was running when Christopher Columbus sailed on his great voyage of discovery; long years, long centuries before that it was built.”

But there is a clock surpassing all others. I call it God’s clock. It is the Sun. Since time began God’s clock has kept time. It is the central clock of our universe. It regulates all others. It does not have to be wound. God has seen to that. How can we help worshiping the God who has made such a clock!

MEMORY VERSE, Psalm 74: 16

“The day is thine, the night also is thine; thou hast prepared the light and the sun.”

MEMORY HYMN

“Sun of my soul, thou Saviour dear.”
