Exploring Music and singing in the Bible

In the Bible it said that we Should praise the Lord and sing praises to his name on high.
Here are some bible verses about it.

  • Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
  • Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
  • Psalm 95:1-3 O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
  • Psalm 104:33 I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
  • Psalm105:1-3 O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.
  • Psalm150 :1-6 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs. Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high-sounding cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.
  • Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
  • 2 Chronicle 20:21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the Lord, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever.

All of these verses say that we should praise the Lord if we don’t the trees, hills, mountains.
and Rocks will, Praise the Lord.

  • Luke 19:37-40 in this verse Jesus said that if the people don’t praise the Lord, the rocks will [stones =rock millstone, stumbling stone]
  • Isaiah 55:11 in this verse it said that the. hills mountains and trees will praise the Lord the and trees will crap their hands and the mountains and hills will sing praise to the Lord God!

Important Words:

  • Hills: is a landform it can be little or big
  • Mountains: higher than a hill landform

Now we look are, going to seeing what it Mean when it is and the mountains and hills will sing in Isaiah 55:12 back we went through, what it means when it said the tree will clap their hand, after that, I will also go over what it means when Jesus said if the people hold there Praise the rock will cry out.

  • Trees will clap their hands:  H4222 – māḥā’ A primitive root; to rub or strike there hands together in Exultation Clap
  • The mountains and hills will sing aloud Isaish 55:12 H7440; properly a creaking,
  • Shout [usually for joy] aloud for joy cry, gladness, [or shrill Sound] Sing, Singing
  • The Rock will Cry out Luke 19:110 G2896 – Primary verb; properly to “creak” [as a raven] a scream, i.e. [generally intreat]: cry [out]. to call aloud [shriek, exclaim]

Musical instruments of the Bible

  • Cymbals: Was used in worship “They could have be made of bronze [See Psalms 50:5 Chronicles 15:191]
  • Lute or Psaltery: Stringed instrument with a large, pear-shaped body
    and a neck. [See Psalms 71:22]
  • Shophar: Is made from a ram horn, the shophar could play only 2 or maybe 3 notes. The instrument most often named in the Bible. They were Signal events in time of war and peace, today they spelled it different Shofar. [1 King 1:34]
  • Trumpet: Is made of metal, the end of this straight instrument was flared. Trumpets may have mad high, shrill Sound Priests played trumpets. Num 10:2-102 Chronicle 5:12-141
  • Harp: King David plays the Harp to his sheep. In some of his psalm, it said to praise the Lord with the Sound of the harp. In Hebrew Harp is Kinnor. [See Psalm 92:1-3 Psalm 150: 1-3 1king 10:12]
  • Lyre : A Stringed instrument used for both worship and other occasions. Was shaped like a trapezoid it just like the harp but with a handle.

Trumpet

  • H3104 Ex 19:13
    The blast of a horn ,specifically the signal of the silver trumpets
  • H7782 Ex 19:16 and King 1:34
    • In the original sense of incising; a cornet (as giving a clear sound) or curved horn-cornet, Trumpet
  • H2689 Numbers 10:2-10
    • a trumpet (from, its Sundered or quavering note) trumpet, trumpeter

Trumpeters

  • 2 Chronicles 5:13
  • Genesis 4:21
    • Harp H3658 = Kinnör from an unsized root meaning to twang, a harp: harp
    • Lyre = H3658= Kinnar from an unused root meaning to twang, Is a Harp with a handle, it kind of looks like a Psaltery.
    • Organ = H5748  oo-gawb’; or עֻגָּב ʻuggâb; from H5689 in the original sense of breathing; a reed-instrument of music: —organ.

Types of music and singing
There are many types of music and singing here are some of them.

  • Hymns & Spiritual song Colossians 3:16 and in Acts 16:25 said that Paul & Silas Song hymns and praise to God.
  • Drunkard’s Song Psalm 69:12
    • This is a Psalm of David he was talking about drunk people singing and laughing.
  • Demonic music: Is not a good kind of music, it often has bad words in it, and it can make, you do evil things.
  • Evil Woman’s Music, Isaiah 23:15-17 In this verse, it says that a woman called the Harlot named Tyre goes around the city Singing

There is one more I want to talk about the Lord Angels praise God, in the Bible and sing songs to him
Angels praise God Luke 2:13-14. In this verse they talk and sing about Baby Jesus being born and the angels telling the Shepherds that Jesus, Christ was born.

Different Styles of Music
There are 12 main styles of music that I will name here:

Whatever style of music that you like, make sure that it honors God.

Understanding the Role of Biblical Prophets

Prophets

God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began… the gospel of God which he promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures 

(Acts 3:21b; Romans 1:2)

The Prophet was to:

  • Prophesy
  • speak or sing by inspiration
  • make prediction (scriptural or other)
  • give simple discourse
  • be a foreteller
  • have visions
  • see

Message – Personal or National

  • Covenant Enforces
    • a call to covenant faithfulness
    • a call to repentance
    • warnings of judgement
    • blessing for obedience

    • prophecies concerning Israel and other nations

The Greatest Prophet: Jesus

  • Behold, I have come to do Thy will (Hebrews 10:7, 9)
  • This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased (Matthew 3:17)
  • Not my will but Thine be done (Luke 22:42)
  • It is finished (John 19:30)

Scriptures

  • Deuteronomy 18:15 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
  • Deuteronomy 18:18-19 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
  • Acts 3:22-24 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
  • Luke 18:31 Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
  • Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
