The Dangers of Starbucks

Starbucks is an interesting company. The logo of the company according to this press release is inspired by the siren in Greek myology.

The logo of Starbuck has changed over the years.

The Sirens, famous figures in Greek mythology, were known for their mesmerizing voices and lethal charm. Often portrayed as half-woman, half-bird, their appearance varied across different stories. These perilous creatures lived on rocky islands, using their enchanting songs to lure unsuspecting sailors to their doom.

The origin of the name “Sirens,” Σειρῆνες (Seirēnes) in Greek, is widely debated and remains unclear. Scholars have proposed various theories, with one popular interpretation linking the name to the Greek word seira, meaning “rope,” “cord,” or “noose.” This implies that the Sirens ensnared or bound their victims with their captivating songs, much like a rope drawing sailors to their demise. This etymology fits well with their portrayal as temptresses.

Another theory ties the name to “seirios,” a Greek word meaning “scorching” or “burning.” This suggests a connection between the Sirens and the intense heat of the sun, especially the star Sirius, known as the “Dog Star,” linked to the hottest part of summer. Their voices might have symbolized a burning desire, consuming those who listened. This etymology hints at passion and danger, with some scholars proposing a link to earlier depictions of the Sirens as sun deities or figures associated with the fiery underworld.

Is this really something that should be a company logo? Should Christians really be supporting a company that uses this as a logo?
