The Importance of the 13th Amendment and Freedom Day

National Freedom Day: is an observance in the United States that honors the signing of a resolution that proposed the 13th amendment of the nation’s constitution on February 1, 1865. Abraham Lincoln, who was the president at the time, signed the resolution to outlaw slavery. This anniversary is annually observed on February 1.

The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, stating that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States”. Ratified on December 6, 1865, it granted Congress the power to enforce this amendment. This amendment is considered a significant milestone in the advancement of human rights in the United States.
