Exodus 20:1–17 gives us God’s own words — His covenant law, spoken directly to His people. What many Christians don’t realize is that every one of these commandments appears again in the New Testament, either quoted directly or reaffirmed in principle.

📖 The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1–17)

God begins by reminding Israel who He is and what He has done:

“I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”

Then He gives His commandments — His moral law.

✨ The Ten Commandments and Their New Testament Confirmation

1. No other gods

Exodus 20:3 — “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
Matthew 4:10 — Jesus: “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

2. No idols or images

Exodus 20:4–6
1 John 5:21 — “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

3. Do not take God’s name in vain

Exodus 20:7
1 Timothy 6:1 — Live honorably so God’s name is not blasphemed.

4. Remember the Sabbath day

Exodus 20:8–11
Acts 13:42–44 — Paul preaches on the Sabbath; the whole city gathers the next Sabbath to hear the Word.

5. Honor your father and mother

Exodus 20:12
Ephesians 6:1–3 — “Honour thy father and mother… that thou mayest live long on the earth.”

6. Do not kill

Exodus 20:13
Romans 13:9 — Paul repeats the commandment directly.

7. Do not commit adultery

Exodus 20:14
Galatians 5:19–21 — Adultery listed among the works of the flesh.

8. Do not steal

Exodus 20:15
Ephesians 4:28 — “Let him that stole steal no more.”

9. Do not bear false witness

Exodus 20:16
Romans 13:9 — Again repeated word for word.

10. Do not covet

Exodus 20:17
Colossians 3:5–6 — Covetousness is called idolatry.

❤️ The Commandments Still Matter — and Love Is the Key

Jesus didn’t erase the commandments — He fulfilled them and showed their true foundation.

Paul summarizes the entire law this way:

“Love is the fulfilling of the law.” — Romans 13:10

When you truly love God:

• You won’t put other gods before Him
• You won’t dishonor His name
• You won’t worship idols
• You will honor His day
• You will treat others with righteousness and purity

Love doesn’t replace obedience — love produces obedience.

Jesus said:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

The commandments are still valid today because God’s character has not changed.
