A place to grow your relationship with God

Psalm 110

  •  The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
  • The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
  • Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
  • The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
  • The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
  • He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
  • He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

Palm 110 This royal psalm is also messianic. Davidic authorship, divine inspiration and messianic interpretation are all assumed by Jesus and the New Testament writers. It ranks as the Psalm most quoted in the New Testament.
It may be analyzed under three headings: Sovereign King (vv. 1-3), Eternal Priest (v. 4), and Victorious Warrior (vv. 5-7).

Sovereign King

It is one of the most majestic and clear prophecies concerning the priestly and kingly ministry of Christ. Christ today is sitting at the Father’s right hand. (See v. 1)

  • Acts 7:55-56
    • But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
    • And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Jesus will remain there until He returns to “put all enemies under his feet”

  • 1 Cor. 15:24-25
    • Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
    •  For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
  • Eph. 1:20-22
    •  Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
    • Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
    • And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

He will rule with a rod of iron” (v. 2)

  • Rev. 2:27
    • And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
  • Rev 12:5
    • And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
  • Rev 19:15
    • And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Eternal Priest

Paul quotes verse 4 in Hebrews 5:6 and 6:20, teaching that Christ is a “priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”
This mysterious priest (spelled Melchizedek in OT KJV) was king of Jerusalem, the first priest of God, in the time of Abraham (see Gen. 14:18-19).

  • Hebrews 5:6
    • As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
  • Hebrews 6:20
    • Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
  • Gen 14:18-19
    • And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
    • And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

Victorious Warrior

The psalmist foresaw the time of God’s wrath, in which the Messiah would judge the kings of the nations and dead bodies would fill the land (v. 5-6). This can certainly refer to the conclusion of the Tribulation, when Christ will return at the battle of Armageddon (see Rev. 16:16), defeating the kings and kingdoms of this world (see Zech. 12:2-9).

  • Rev. 16:16
    • And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
  • Zech 12:2-9
    • Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
    • And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
    • In that day, saith the Lord, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness.
    • And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the Lord of hosts their God.
    • In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.
    • The Lord also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah.
    • In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them.
    • And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you were born as one of us,
you suffered and died, and you were raised for us.
ou are our great high priest, and with true justice and unending mercy
you will return to judge and rule the earth.
you we have nothing to fear, not even death itself.
All glory and pralse are yours in this and every age. Amen.
