Simple Homemade Cleaners for Every Surface

🧼 Cleaning Floors, Walls & Furnishings

God calls us to be faithful stewards of the spaces He’s entrusted to us—not just in grand gestures, but in the quiet, daily care of our homes. Mopping, dusting, and wiping can be simple acts of gratitude, calming our hearts as we tend to what He has placed in our care. With a few basic tools and humble ingredients, we can gently restore beauty and peace to the spaces where life’s fullness unfolds.

Natural cleaning isn’t just about avoiding harsh chemicals—it’s about honoring creation, embracing simplicity, and making our homes places of rest and renewal. Whether we’re scrubbing a floor or freshening a favorite chair, we’re participating in God’s work of restoration, one gentle task at a time.

🌿 Scripture Reflection: A Quiet Ministry

“Aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands.” —1 Thessalonians 4:11

There is dignity in the quiet work of home keeping. As we sweep, polish, and care for our furnishings, we reflect the heart of a God who brings order out of chaos and beauty out of dust. These tasks may seem small, but they shape the atmosphere of our homes—places where love is practiced, hospitality is offered, and peace is nurtured.

FLOORS, WALLS & FURNISHINGS

FLOORS

No-Wax Vinyl Flooring

  • To clean and shine, add ½ cup white vinegar to ½ gallon warm water.

Carpets

  • To bring out the color in rugs and carpets, brush them with a mixture of 1 cup white vinegar and 1 gallon water.
    • Or wipe them vigorously with a damp cloth soaked in a strong salt solution.
  • Animal urine stains and odors can usually be vanquished by using a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Sponge it into the carpet and then blot it up with thick towels.
    • If the stain is near the wall, also wash the wall (about 18 inches up) with the mixture, as the culprit may have been a male cat.
  • To make your own carpet (and upholstery) shampoo, combine 1 quart water, ¼ cup mild powdered detergent, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
    • Using an eggbeater, whip into a stiff foam.
    • Apply to the fabric with a soft brush, sponge, or terry cloth, rubbing gently and using even pressure to prevent streaking.
    • Scrape away soiled foam with a dull knife.
    • Wipe off residue with a damp cloth or sponge.
  • To clean up coffee spills, blot up excess coffee, then rub the stain with a solution of water, mild powdered detergent, and white vinegar.
    • combine 1 quart water, ¼ cup mild powdered detergent, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.
  • Remove greasy spills by sponging with a solution of four parts alcohol and one part salt.

Wood & Tile Floors

  • To whiten an unpainted wood floor, sprinkle freely with clean white sand.
    • Leave the sand on the floor for a few days. In the process of walking to and fro, the family will keep the boards scoured to a snowy white.
  • Wash a wood or tile floor with an orange cut in half. Put one half in each hand, get down on your knees, and work in circles to remove grease and dirt.
    • Rinse with a damp rag.

Homemade Cleaners

  • You can make effective, natural floor cleaners at home using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, castile soap, and essential oils for a safe, streak-free clean.
    • Basic Ingredients and Their Benefits
      • White vinegar: Acts as a mild disinfectant and degreaser, ideal for tile, vinyl, and laminate floors, but should be avoided on natural stone or waxed wood to prevent etching or damage.
      • Baking soda: Gentle abrasive and deodorizer, useful for spot cleaning and deep cleaning.
      • Castile soap: Plant-based, biodegradable soap that cleans effectively without harsh chemicals.
      • Essential oils: Tea tree, lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, or peppermint add fragrance and antimicrobial properties.
        • care should be taken it you are using around pets. Some essential oils are not safe for cats and dogs.
      • Hot or warm water: Helps dissolve grime and speeds up drying.

Simple Recipes

Vinegar and Water Cleaner

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and hot water.

Vinegar, Lemon, and Olive Oil (for wood floors)

  • Combine hot water, lemon juice, and a small amount of olive oil.
  • Mop lightly and allow to air dry for a natural shine.

All-Purpose Cleaner with Alcohol

  • Mix water, white vinegar, and rubbing alcohol in a specific ratio.
  • Safe for all hard floors, disinfects, and leaves no streaks. Double the alcohol if avoiding vinegar.

Borax Solution

  • Dissolve Borax in warm water for a disinfecting cleaner suitable for bathrooms and high-traffic areas. No rinsing required.

Usage Tips

  • Always dilute vinegar or other acidic ingredients to protect sensitive surfaces.
  • Mop in small sections to ensure even cleaning and faster drying.
  • Shake or stir homemade cleaners before use if stored for later.
  • Add 2–3 drops of essential oil to any solution for fragrance and extra antimicrobial effect.
  • Avoid using vinegar on marble, granite, or unsealed wood to prevent damage.

Safety and Eco Benefits

  • Natural homemade cleaners are non-toxic, safe for children and pets, and reduce exposure to harsh chemicals. They are also environmentally friendly, using ingredients commonly found in your kitchen.

WALLS

Wood Paneling

  • Combine 1-quart warm water, ½ cup white vinegar, and 2 tablespoons olive oil.
  • Dampen a soft cloth with this solution and wipe the paneling, then wipe with a dry cloth.

Painted and Varnished Surfaces:

  • To clean, use a solution of 1-gallon warm water, 1 cup ammonia, ½ cup white vinegar, and ¼ cup baking soda.
  • There is no need to rinse or dry the surface.

Woodwork:

  • Remove fingerprints by rubbing a slice of potato over the stain.
  • After general cleaning, rinse with the juice of 1 lemon diluted in 1 quart water to maintain the woodwork’s shine.

Windows and Mirrors

  • Add 2 tablespoons white vinegar to 1 cup water and put in a spray bottle.
  • Spray the window or mirror lightly and wipe with crumpled newspaper.
    • Avoid the edges of mirrors, as moisture will spoil the silver on the back.

WORKING WITH THE WEATHER
When the sun is shining brightly, you may notice that your windows need washing, but that’s not the best time to do them.

  • Instead, choose an overcast, fairly warm day without a breeze. Windows washed in the sunlight or on a windy day will streak much more readily than those washed on a cloudy day, as the latter will dry more slowly.
    • You can wipe away the streaks as you see them, before they dry into ones that will need to be removed with a wet cloth.
  • You don’t want to wash windows on a really cold day either. Very cold glass also streaks badly, and you’ll lose heat from the house as you open and close the windows to wash them.
