Standing on Holy Ground: A Heart-Searching Reflection

Holy Ground

There are moments in Scripture when ordinary places become extraordinary—not because of the soil beneath a person’s feet, but because of the God who draws near. When Moses approached the burning bush, the Lord said, “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5). That single moment reminds us that holiness is defined by God’s presence, not by geography.

In our own gatherings, our sanctuaries, and even the quiet corners of our homes, we are invited to recognize the same truth: wherever God meets with His people becomes sacred space. The psalmist calls us to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness” (Psalm 29:2), and Jesus assures us that “where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).

This page is an invitation to pause, reflect, and rediscover what it means to stand on holy ground. It is a call to approach God with reverence, to love one another deeply, and to recognize His nearness in our worship, our fellowship, and our daily walk.

May these reflections help us enter His presence with awe, gratitude, and a renewed awareness that the Holy One is among us.

Many years ago, the song “We Are Standing on Holy Ground” was sung in countless congregations. At the church I attended then, we often sang only the chorus, yet even that short refrain carried a powerful message. Lately, that song has been on my mind again, stirring several questions worth pondering.

🌿 Do we truly understand that the sanctuary is meant to be holy ground?

In Scripture, holy ground is not defined by architecture but by God’s presence. When Moses approached the burning bush, God said, “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5).
If God’s people gather in His name, and He promises to be in their midst (Matthew 18:20), then our assemblies are not ordinary moments. They are sacred. Set apart. Worthy of reverence.

❤️ Is this really a place where love abounds?

Jesus said that love would be the defining mark of His disciples:
“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
A congregation may have polished pews, beautiful singing, and orderly worship—but if love is absent, something essential is missing (1 Corinthians 13:1–3).
Holy ground should also be loving ground.

🙏 Do we truly believe we are standing in the presence of Almighty God?

Worship is not a routine or a weekly habit. It is an encounter with the living God.
The psalmist wrote, “Let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker” (Psalm 95:6).
The Hebrew writer reminds us that when we come before God, we approach Him with “reverence and godly fear” because “our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:28–29).
If we genuinely grasp that truth, it changes how we sing, how we listen, how we pray, and how we treat one another.

The Song

We Are Standing on Holy Ground- Bill Gaither

Verse 1
When I walk through the doors I sensed His presence
And I knew this was a place where love abounds
For this is a temple the God we love abides here
Oh we are standing in His presence on holy ground

(chorus)
We are standing on holy ground
For I know that there are angels all around
Let us praise Jesus now
For we are standing in Hos presence on holy ground

Verse 2
In His presence I know there is joy beyond all measure
And at His feet sweet peace of mind can still be found
For when we have a need He is still the answer
Reach out and claim it for we are standing on holy ground

(chorus)
We are standing on holy ground
For I know that there are angels all around
Let us praise Jesus now
For we are standing in His presence on holy ground

Let us praise Jesus now
For we are standing in His presence on holy ground
