🌅 Timeline of the 40 Days Between Resurrection and Ascension

Below is a chronological outline of the key events Scripture records from Resurrection Sunday to Ascension Day.


Day 1 — Resurrection Sunday (Easter)

Events:

  • Women discover the empty tomb (Matthew 28:1–8)
  • Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene (John 20:11–18)
  • Jesus appears to the other women (Matthew 28:9–10)
  • Jesus appears to Peter (Luke 24:34)
  • Jesus appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35)
  • Jesus appears to the disciples (without Thomas) in Jerusalem (John 20:19–23)

Day 8 — Jesus Appears to Thomas

Events:

  • Jesus appears again to the disciples, this time with Thomas present
  • Thomas confesses, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:24–29)

Sometime During the 40 Days — Teaching and Appearances

Scripture does not assign exact dates to these events, but they occurred between Day 1 and Day 40.

Appearance by the Sea of Galilee

  • Jesus directs the miraculous catch of fish
  • Jesus restores Peter: “Feed My sheep.” (John 21:1–19)

Appearance on a Mountain in Galilee

  • Jesus gives the Great Commission
    “Go therefore and teach all nations…” (Matthew 28:16–20)

Appearance to 500 Believers at Once

  • Paul records this large gathering (1 Corinthians 15:6)

Appearance to James (the Lord’s brother)

  • Mentioned by Paul (1 Corinthians 15:7)

Many Additional Teachings

  • Jesus speaks about the Kingdom of God
  • He opens the disciples’ understanding of the Scriptures (Luke 24:45)
  • He instructs them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4–5)

Day 40 — The Ascension

Location: Mount of Olives, near Bethany
Events:

  • Jesus blesses His disciples (Luke 24:50)
  • Jesus is taken up into heaven (Acts 1:9)
  • A cloud receives Him from their sight
  • Two angels promise His return:
    “This same Jesus… shall so come in like manner.” (Acts 1:11)

Afterward:

  • The disciples return to Jerusalem with great joy (Luke 24:52)
  • They remain in prayer, awaiting the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:12–14)
