The Devil Comes Back to Georgia — A Warning Against Pride

Ten years have passed since Johnny beat the Devil. But the enemy doesn’t give up. He waits. He watches. He returns.

This sequel to The Devil Went Down to Georgia reminds us of a sobering truth: the Devil doesn’t stop tempting us just because we’ve won a battle. And pride is often the crack he slips through.

1. Pride: The Devil’s Favorite Weapon

The Devil opens with a bitter boast: “I’m the best there’s ever been.”
He tries to stir up Johnny’s pride, hoping to make him forget his dependence on God.

The Bible warns:

  • “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
  • “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” — 1 Corinthians 1:31

Victory can make us vulnerable.
When we start believing we’re “the best there’s ever been,” we stop leaning on the One who gave us strength.

2. The Devil Returns — But So Does the Test

The Devil says, “The sin of pride is what will do you in.”
He’s not wrong. Pride is deadly. But the Devil is also a liar.

Johnny’s response is humble and grounded:
“Now devil, it would be a sin for you to get my bow. You go on back to hell, and to the woodshed I will go.”

He doesn’t boast. He doesn’t rush.
He chooses practice over pride.
He chooses preparation over provocation.

3. Staying Close to God in the Quiet Seasons

Johnny admits he hasn’t played much since his baby was born. Life changes. Priorities shift. But the Devil sees that as weakness.

The Bible reminds us:

  • “Be sober-minded; be watchful.” — 1 Peter 5:8
  • “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8

Even in quiet seasons, we must stay spiritually sharp.
The Devil doesn’t care if we’re tired, distracted, or busy—he just wants our soul.

4. The Real Victory Is Staying with God

Johnny doesn’t win because he’s the best.
He wins because he stays grounded.
He thanks God’s Word. He resists temptation. He chooses righteousness over rivalry.

The Bible says:

  • “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7
  • “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial.” — James 1:12

The Devil dreams of winning.
But Johnny chooses to walk with God.

The Lesson:

  • Pride opens the door to defeat.
  • The Devil will come back—but you don’t have to fall.
  • Stay humble. Stay prepared. Stay close to God.

Because the real victory isn’t in beating the Devil at his game—
it’s in refusing to play.
