A Biblical Response to “If You Don’t Believe Like Me, You’re Going to Hell”

1. Salvation Is God’s Work — Not Human Policing

The Bible never gives believers the authority to declare who is or isn’t saved based on secondary issues. Salvation is the work of Jesus alone, not human gatekeepers.

  • Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
    • Salvation is found only in Jesus.
  • Ephesians 2:8–9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
    • We are saved by grace through faith, not of works, so no one can boast.
  • John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
    • Jesus Himself keeps His people; no one else holds that power.

When people say, “If you don’t do what I do, you’re not saved,” they are stepping into a role that belongs to Christ alone.

2. Believers Grow at Different Speeds and in Different Orders

God does not mass‑produce disciples. He shepherds each one personally.

  • Philippians 2:12–13  Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
    • Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for God works in you.
  • Psalm 32:8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
    • God instructs and teaches us in the way we should go.
  • John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
    • The Spirit guides us into all truth.

This means:

  • We learn different truths at different times.
  • God deals with us according to what we can bear.
  • Spiritual growth is not identical for every believer.

The Spirit is the Teacher; we are not.

3. Secondary Practices Are Not the Basis of Salvation

Two excellent examples: the Feasts and speaking in tongues.

A. The Feasts

I love keeping the Feasts — and that’s beautiful. But Scripture shows that practices like these are not the foundation of salvation.

  • Colossians 2:16–17 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
    • Let no one judge you regarding Sabbaths, festivals, or new moons; these are shadows pointing to Christ.
  • Romans 14:5–6 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

Some believers discover the richness of the Feasts later. Some never do. None of this determines salvation.

B. Speaking in Tongues

Tongues are biblical, powerful, and edifying — but they are not a salvation requirement.

  • 1 Corinthians 14:18–19 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
    • Paul spoke in tongues more than all of them, but preferred intelligible words when teaching.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:29–30 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
    • Not all believers speak in tongues; the Spirit distributes gifts as He wills.

Tongues are a gift, not a gate.

4. The Danger of Adding Requirements to the Gospel

When people say, “You must do ___ to be saved,” they are repeating the error of the early Judaizers.

  • Acts 15:1–11
    • The apostles rejected adding requirements to salvation.
  • Galatians 1:6–9 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
    • Adding to the gospel is called “another gospel,” and Paul strongly warns against it.

The gospel is simple:

  • Romans 10:9–10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
    • Believe in your heart, confess Jesus as Lord, and you will be saved.

Everything else flows from discipleship, not salvation.

5. Our Calling: Witness, Not Control

We are not the Savior. We are the witnesses.

  • Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
    • We are empowered to be witnesses.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:6–7 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
    • We plant and water, but God gives the increase.
  • 2 Timothy 2:24–25 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
    • The Lord’s servant must not strive, but gently instruct.

We share truth.
We live truth.
We love people.
And we trust the Spirit to do the transforming.

6. Summary

  • Salvation is through Jesus alone.
  • Growth is Spirit‑led and personal.
  • Secondary practices (Feasts, tongues, etc.) do not determine salvation.
  • Adding requirements to the gospel is unbiblical.
  • Our job is to witness; God does the saving.
