Purpose
This simple trap draws houseflies with sweetness and keeps them from escaping once they enter. It’s safe, inexpensive, and easy to make with items you already have at home.
You’ll Need
- 1 clean plastic bottle (16–20 oz size works well)
- Scissors or a craft knife
- Sugar (2 tablespoons)
- Water (½ cup)
- Optional: a drop of dish soap
- Tape or string to secure the funnel
Step‑by‑Step Instructions
- Cut the Bottle
- Cut the top third off the bottle.
- You’ll use the bottom as the container and the top as the funnel.
- Mix the Bait
- Stir sugar into warm water until dissolved.
- Add a drop of dish soap to break surface tension so flies sink instead of landing.
- Assemble the Trap
- Pour the sugar‑water mixture into the bottom half of the bottle.
- Invert the top half (neck down) into the bottom to form a funnel.
- Tape or tie the edges so it stays secure.
- Place the Trap
- Set it near windows, trash cans, or any area where flies gather.
- Avoid placing it near food prep surfaces.
- Empty and Refresh Weekly
- When the mixture becomes cloudy or full of flies, pour it out, rinse, and refill.
Why It Works
Flies follow the sweet scent down the funnel but can’t find their way back out. The dish soap helps them sink quickly, ending the cycle before they multiply.
