Revelation chapter 5: The Lamb Receives the Scroll
This teaching explores the often-overlooked moment that takes place before the first seal is opened in Revelation 6. Scripture shows that the seals do not begin with the Four Horsemen. They begin with a heavenly event: the Lamb taking the scroll. This moment triggers worship from heaven, earth, and all creation.
1. The Scroll Is Revealed
A scroll appears in the right hand of the One seated on the throne. It is sealed with seven seals, representing the authority to judge, redeem, and restore creation.
“And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside and on the back, sealed with seven seals.” — Revelation 5:1
A mighty angel asks who is worthy to open it, but no one is found.
“No one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look at it.” — Revelation 5:3
John weeps because history cannot move forward until someone worthy appears.
2. The Lamb Appears as Worthy
One of the elders announces that the Lion of Judah has prevailed. John turns and sees a Lamb who had been slain.
“Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah… has prevailed to open the scroll.” — Revelation 5:5
“And I looked, and behold… a Lamb as though it had been slain.” — Revelation 5:6
The Lamb steps forward and takes the scroll from the right hand of God.

3. Heaven Responds in Worship
When the Lamb takes the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fall before Him.
“You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals.” — Revelation 5:9
They declare that the Lamb has redeemed people from every tribe and nation.
4. All Creation Praises God and the Lamb
This is the moment many overlook: every creature responds.
“And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!’” — Revelation 5:13
This universal praise happens before the first seal is opened.

5. Only Then Does the First Seal Open
After the worship of heaven and earth, the Lamb opens the first seal.

The Horsemen do not begin the story. They follow the moment when the Lamb is declared worthy.
