Follow Me: The Meaning of Jesus’ Call to Matthew

1. The Moment Jesus Spoke

When Jesus passed by Matthew sitting at the tax booth, He spoke two simple words:

“Follow Me.” (Matthew 9:9)

Matthew immediately rose and followed Him. These words carried far more weight in the original Greek than our English phrase suggests.

2. The Greek Word: ἀκολουθέω (akolouthéō)

The verb Jesus used is ἀκολουθέω, a rich word that means much more than walking behind someone.

Layers of Meaning:

  • To walk the same road with someone — sharing their path and direction.
  • To join as a disciple — attaching yourself to a teacher.
  • To accompany closely — staying near, remaining present.
  • To align your life with another’s — adopting their way of living.

This is not a casual invitation. It is a call to belonglearn, and live differently.

3. A Present Imperative: A Continual Call

Jesus’ phrase ἀκολούθει μοι is in the present imperative, which means:

“Keep on following Me continually.”

It is not a one-time step but a lifelong direction.

4. What Matthew Understood

As a tax collector, Matthew lived a wealthy but spiritually compromised life. When Jesus said, “Follow Me,” Matthew understood:

  • Leave your old path
  • Join My path
  • Attach your life to Mine
  • Learn My ways
  • Walk with Me daily

This is why he rose immediately. The call was clear, authoritative, and life-changing.

5. The Discipleship Pattern in Scripture

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus’ call to follow Him always includes:

  • A new identity — from sinner to disciple.
  • A new loyalty — Jesus becomes the Teacher and Lord.
  • A new purpose — joining His mission.
  • A new community — the fellowship of disciples.

Following Jesus is not merely movement; it is transformation.
