A Teaching Outline
I. God Uses the Physical to Teach the Spiritual
Key idea: Scripture consistently shows that God reveals spiritual truths through physical realities.
- Jesus used seeds, storms, bread, water, and farming
- The prophets used drought, rain, famine, and harvest
- Paul used running, building, and warfare
- Creation itself is a teaching tool (Romans 1:20)
Physical patterns often mirror spiritual patterns.
What we see in the natural can prepare us for what God is doing in the spiritual.
II. Biblical Pattern: Physical Rain → Spiritual Rain
A. Joel 2:23–29 — Former rain and latter rain
- Former rain = physical rain for crops
- Latter rain = outpouring of the Spirit
- God uses the natural cycle to explain spiritual revival
B. 1 Kings 18 — Elijah and the drought
- Physical drought revealed spiritual drought in Israel
- The small cloud signaled both physical and spiritual breakthrough
C. Hosea 6:3 — “He shall come unto us as the rain”
- God compares His movement to weather patterns
III. Physical Droughts Reveal Spiritual Conditions
A. In Scripture
- Amos 8:11 — famine of hearing the Word
- Jeremiah 14 — physical drought tied to spiritual rebellion
- Psalm 63 — “a dry and thirsty land” mirrors a thirsty soul
B. In life
- Dry seasons expose what is shallow
- Dry seasons reveal hidden springs
- Dry seasons show who is rooted and who is not
IV. Physical Patterns Teach Us Spiritual Patterns
A. Rain comes in stages
- Clouds gather
- Pressure shifts
- Wind changes
- Temperature drops
- Rain falls
Spiritual outpouring follows the same pattern:
- Hunger increases
- Atmosphere shifts
- Prayer rises
- Conviction deepens
- God moves
B. Drought exposes what is real
- Shallow roots die
- Deep roots survive
- Hidden sources appear
- True strength is revealed
V. Jesus Himself Taught This Way
A. Earthly things → heavenly things (John 3:12)
Jesus said plainly:
“If you don’t understand earthly things, how will you understand heavenly things?”
B. Physical examples Jesus used:
- Water → new birth
- Bread → spiritual nourishment
- Light → revelation
- Vine and branches → spiritual connection
- Storm → faith under pressure
Jesus constantly used the physical world to explain spiritual truth.
VI. Why This Matters Today
A. We live in a time of spiritual drought
- Shallow teaching
- Stage culture
- Hype movements
- Emotionalism
- Declining depth
- Confusion and instability
B. Physical seasons can remind us of spiritual seasons
Not predictions.
Not signs.
Just parallels.
C. Dry seasons reveal who has deep roots
- Some churches will dry up
- Some will fracture
- Some will survive
- Some will thrive
- Some will reveal hidden springs
VII. How to Respond When the Physical Mirrors the Spiritual
A. Don’t panic — observe
Dry seasons are revealing seasons.
B. Look for the springs
Who is steady?
Who is rooted?
Who is grounded in Scripture?
