🧊 Kitchen Safety Beyond Fire Prevention

The heart of the home deserves thoughtful care

The kitchen is where love is shared through meals and conversation — but it’s also full of tools, heat, and movement. These small habits help keep the heart of the home peaceful and safe for everyone.

🔪 Knife Storage and Safe Handling

  • Keep knives in a block, drawer, or magnetic strip out of children’s reach.
  • Teach older children to carry knives with the blade pointing down.
  • Always cut away from the body and use a stable cutting board.
  • Say together: “We use tools with care.”

👧 “Safe Zones” for Children Who Want to Help

  • Create a special spot for little helpers — a stool or mat away from heat and sharp tools.
  • Let them wash vegetables, stir cool ingredients, or set the table.
  • Praise their care and remind them that helping safely is part of growing wise.

💧 Spill Prevention

  • Wipe spills right away to prevent slips.
  • Keep towels handy and teach children to say, “I see a spill!” when they notice one.
  • Encourage teamwork — safety is everyone’s job.

🔌 Appliance Cords and Counter Edges

  • Keep cords tucked and appliances pushed back from edges.
  • Unplug mixers, toasters, and blenders when not in use.
  • Explain that cords can pull heavy things down — “We keep cords safe and still.”

🍎 Choking Hazards and Safe Food Prep

  • Cut food into small, manageable pieces for young children.
  • Avoid hard or round foods like grapes or nuts for toddlers.
  • Teach chewing slowly and sitting while eating.
  • Make mealtime peaceful — no rushing, no running.

👩‍🍳 Family Activity: “Kitchen Helper Badge”

Create a simple badge for children who follow safety rules — draw a heart, a spoon, and a smile.

  • Write “Kitchen Helper” on it and let them color it in.
  • Celebrate their care and remind them that helping safely honors God’s gift of family.
