  • Rhubarb — toxic leaves and stems.
  • Stone fruit pits (peaches, plums, cherries) — pits contain cyanide compounds.
  • Oleander, yew, azalea — extremely poisonous plants; even small amounts can be fatal.

These vegetables can create dangerous gas buildup:

  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Kale

All of these can cause gas colic, which can become serious.

These are not toxic but still unsafe for horses:

  • Bread — can cause blockages if eaten in quantity.
  • Dairy products — horses are lactose‑intolerant.
  • Meat — horses are herbivores; meat can upset digestion.

  • Lawn clippings — ferment quickly and can cause colic or laminitis.
