🐑 Moses the Shepherd: Prepared by God
Moses’ life is a powerful testimony of how God shapes His servants through every season—whether in a palace, a desert, or the midst of His people.
Moses was born during a time of great danger for the Hebrews. Pharaoh had commanded that all newborn Hebrew boys be killed (Exodus 1:22). Yet Moses’ mother “saw him that he was a goodly child” and hid him for three months (Exodus 2:2). When she could hide him no longer, she placed him in an ark of bulrushes coated with pitch and set it among the reeds of the Nile (Exodus 2:3). Pharaoh’s daughter found the child and had compassion on him (Exodus 2:5–6). Through God’s providence, Moses’ sister offered to bring a nurse—and Moses’ own mother was hired to care for him (Exodus 2:7–9).
Moses grew up as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter for forty years (Acts 7:21–23), receiving the education and training of Egyptian royalty. But after fleeing Egypt, he entered a new season—forty years in the desert of Midian. There he became a shepherd, tending the flock of his father‑in‑law, Jethro (Exodus 3:1). In those quiet years, Moses learned humility, patience, and the steady care required to lead living creatures. God was preparing him for a far greater flock.
At the end of those forty years, God appeared to Moses in the burning bush (Exodus 3:2–4). From that holy ground, the Lord called him to return to Egypt and deliver His people from bondage (Exodus 3:10). The shepherd of Midian would become the shepherd of Israel.
For the next forty years, Moses led the children of Israel through the wilderness. He interceded for them, taught them God’s law, and guided them toward the Promised Land (Numbers 27:15–17). The same staff he once used for sheep became the instrument through which God displayed His power.
Moses’ life—forty years in Egypt, forty years in Midian, and forty years leading Israel—shows us that God wastes nothing. Every season was preparation. Every hardship was shaping. Every moment was part of God’s plan.
From shepherding sheep to shepherding a nation, Moses reminds us that God equips those He calls.
