Prayer is communication with God. From the beginning, God desired a people who would walk with Him and talk with Him. That calling is reaffirmed in 1 Peter 2:9:
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people…”
Peter is echoing God’s original intention in Exodus 19:6:
“And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.”
Israel rejected that calling at the time of the Exodus, so the Levites became the mediators.
But now, through Jesus Christ, every believer is invited into the royal priesthood.
Jesus is our High Priest — the only mediator we need.
A Royal Priesthood Must Communicate With the King
As priests, we are called to constant communion with God.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 commands:
“Pray without ceasing.”
To pray without ceasing means to live in continual communication with Jesus — speaking to Him, listening to Him, and walking with Him throughout the day.
How do we communicate with God?
- We talk to Him through prayer.
- We listen to Him through His Word.
Communication is two‑way. A priest who never listens cannot serve well. A priest who never speaks cannot intercede.
A Royal Priesthood Must Also Live Like Royalty
Being part of God’s royal priesthood is not just about prayer — it is about holiness.
Too many Christians live as “Sunday‑only” believers.
But Scripture calls us to a daily life that reflects the character of God.
Holiness is not a costume we put on for church.
Holiness is a lifestyle.
People should recognize that we belong to God:
- at the store
- at work
- at school
- at home
- in our conversations
- in our behavior
- in our appearance
Holiness is both inward and outward.
- Looking outwardly Christian while living wickedly inside is hypocrisy.
- Trying to be holy inwardly while dressing or behaving in ways that dishonor God is confusion.
Both matter.
Both reflect the King we represent.
Seek God’s Will for Your Life
As priests of the King, we should continually ask:
- “Lord, how should I speak?”
- “How should I behave?”
- “How should I dress?”
- “How should I represent You today?”
God will answer those who seek Him sincerely.
Read the Bible daily.
Pray continually.
Walk closely with Jesus.
He will reveal His will to those who desire holiness.
