Understanding the Natural, Carnal, and Spiritual Man

A Biblical Framework for Discipleship and Spiritual Growth

🌿 The Natural Man

Takeaway: The natural man lives entirely in the flesh, separated from God, unable to understand spiritual truth.

Identity and Condition

The natural man is the person who lives without God, governed by the lower, sinful nature inherited from Adam after the fall. The “flesh” here refers not to the physical body but to the fallen nature that dominates the unregenerate heart.

In this condition, the door of the spirit is closed—the part of a person that communes with God is inactive. The door of the flesh is wide open, directing thoughts, desires, and decisions.

Key Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 2:14 — The natural man cannot receive or understand the things of the Spirit.
  • Galatians 5:19–21 — The works of the flesh are evident and exclude one from inheriting God’s kingdom.
  • Romans 8:8 — Those in the flesh cannot please God.
  • Judges 21:25 — Without God’s rule, people do what is right in their own eyes.
  • Proverbs 14:12; 16:25 — The way that seems right to man leads to death.

Summary

The natural man must be born again—his spirit awakened and made alive by the Holy Spirit.

🌾 The Carnal Christian

Takeaway: The carnal Christian is saved but still dominated by fleshly desires, living in spiritual immaturity.

Identity and Condition

The carnal Christian has opened the door of the spirit by receiving Christ, yet has not closed the door of the flesh. They possess the divine nature but do not consistently walk in it. Their spiritual growth is stunted, and their decisions often reflect the old nature rather than the new.

Key Scriptures

  • 1 Corinthians 3:1–3 — Carnal believers behave like spiritual infants, marked by envy, strife, and division.
  • Romans 8:5 — Carnal Christians set their minds on fleshly things.
  • Galatians 5:16–17 — The flesh and Spirit war against each other, limiting spiritual obedience.
  • Romans 7:15–25 — Paul describes the inner conflict between the desire to do good and the power of indwelling sin.

Summary

Carnal Christians must learn to walk in the Spirit, closing the door to the flesh through obedience, surrender, and spiritual discipline.

🌟 The Spiritual Christian

Takeaway: The spiritual Christian lives under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, surrendered fully to Christ.

Identity and Condition

The spiritual Christian has closed the door to the flesh and lives with the spirit wide open to God. Their life is marked by surrender, obedience, and dependence on Jesus. They walk in the Spirit, bear His fruit, and live out the new nature.

Key Scriptures

  • Galatians 2:20 — Christ lives in the believer; life is lived by faith in Him.
  • Romans 8:1–2 — Freedom from condemnation comes through walking in the Spirit.
  • Romans 12:1–2 — A transformed mind leads to a life aligned with God’s will.
  • Romans 6:12–14 — Sin no longer reigns; believers yield themselves to God.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19–20; 3:16–17 — The believer is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
  • Ephesians 5:18 — Be continually filled with the Spirit.
  • Galatians 5:22–25 — The fruit of the Spirit marks the life of one who walks in Him.

Summary

The spiritual Christian is sold out to Jesus, living a life shaped by the Spirit’s power, producing His fruit, and glorifying God in body and spirit.
