🎯 Objective
Experiment with different forces to change how objects move.
🧩 Materials
- 🚗 Toy that rolls (car or ball)
- 🪞 Smooth surface (table or floor)
🔬 Experiment 1: Apply a Force to Move an Object
- Place your toy on a smooth, level surface.
- Push the toy to make it move.
- When you push the toy, you use a force that makes it move.
🧠 Experiment 2: Let the Force of Friction Stop a Moving Object
- Place your toy on the smooth surface again.
- Push it and let it roll without touching it.
- Watch it slow down and stop.
💡 Why did it stop all on its own?
Because of the force of friction!
✋ Experiment 3: Apply a Force to Stop a Moving Object
- Place your toy on the smooth surface.
- Push it to make it move.
- Use your hand to gently stop it.
You used a force to stop a moving object.
🎠 Experiment 4: Make Your Own Merry‑Go‑Round
- In a safe, cleared area, clasp both hands with a partner.
- Face each other and spin in a circle.
- (Don’t do this!) What would happen if you suddenly let go while spinning fast?
The force you and your partner use with your hands to keep moving in a circle is called centripetal force.
That’s the same force Peter and Polly used to stay safely on the merry‑go‑round!
