☀️ Dog Heat Safety Plan

1. Preparation

  • Hydration setup — Keep fresh water in multiple shaded spots; add ice cubes during peak heat.
  • Cooling gear — Use cooling mats, vests, or damp towels for rest areas.
  • Shade zones — Provide natural shade (trees, umbrellas) and avoid metal kennels that trap heat.
  • Travel timing — Walk early morning or after sunset; asphalt can burn paws above 85°F.

2. Monitoring

  • Check temperature — Keep outdoor time short when heat index exceeds 90°F.
  • Observe panting and gums — Rapid panting, red gums, or sticky saliva mean it’s time to cool down.
  • Track humidity — High humidity prevents effective panting; treat it as extra heat.

3. Emergency Response

  • Move to cool area — Indoors with AC or shaded porch.
  • Apply cool water — Wet belly, paws, and inner thighs; avoid ice baths.
  • Offer small sips — Gradual hydration prevents shock.
  • Call vet — If vomiting, collapse, or confusion appear, contact your vet immediately.
