Understanding the Fall of Man and Redemption

Conscience

“…that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.”

Romans 1:19 (NASB)

I. Man: The Fall

The Effects of the Fall

The Fall left humanity:

  • Physically alive
  • Spiritually dead
  • Separated from God
  • No longer in union and fellowship with God
  • Possessing a sinful nature (the flesh), now part of man’s personality

The Temptation and Man’s Sin

Scripture Reading

Genesis 3:1-7

  • The serpent tempted Eve.
  • Adam and Eve disobeyed God.
  • Sin entered the human experience.

Man’s Fear, Shame, and Blame

Scripture Reading

Genesis 3:8-13

As a result of sin:

  • Adam and Eve hid from God.
  • Fear entered their lives.
  • Shame entered their lives.
  • They blamed others rather than accepting responsibility.

God’s Judgment

Scripture Reading

Genesis 3:14-24

God pronounced judgment upon:

  • The serpent
  • The woman
  • The man
  • The ground

Humanity was expelled from the Garden of Eden and separated from the Tree of Life.

God’s Mercy and Promise

Scripture Reading

Genesis 3:15, 21

Even in judgment, God showed mercy.

  • God promised the coming Redeemer.
  • The woman’s Seed would ultimately defeat the serpent.
  • God provided coverings for Adam and Eve.

This is the first promise of salvation found in Scripture.

II. Man: A New Creation

“Ye Must Be Born Again”

When a person believes in Christ:

  • Union with God is restored.
  • Spiritual life is received.
  • The believer becomes a new creation.

John 3:3, 5

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

Eternal Life Through Christ

John 3:16

“Whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

John 6:40

“Every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life.”

Titus 1:2

“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.”

John 17:3

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God…
