🦴 Vertebrates

🎯 Objective

Reinforce that vertebrates have backbones. Children will learn that animals like fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals all have spines that help them move and stay strong.

🖍️ Materials

  • Crayons or markers
  • Paper

🐟 Procedure

  1. Look at the fish skeleton picture below. Notice the long line of bones — that’s the backbone!
  2. On your paper, draw your own fish using the picture as a guide.
  3. Add the backbone inside your fish — draw a straight line down the middle with little bones branching out.
  4. Color your fish and give it a happy face!
  5. Label the backbone so everyone can see where it is.

💡 Extension Idea

Ask children to name other animals with backbones — like cats, frogs, or birds — and draw one of those next!
