🐖 Pig Skeleton Drawing Activity

Here’s a farm science activity for teaching about pigs and their bones. It encourages observation, drawing, and learning about anatomy in a fun way.

✨ Objective

Children will look at a picture of a pig’s backbone and other bones, then draw what they see to learn how bones help animals move and stand.

🧠 What You’ll Need

  • A printed picture of a pig skeleton (showing backbone, ribs, legs, and skull) See below.
  • Blank drawing paper
  • Pencils and crayons
  • Optional: magnifying glass for close observation

🐷 Step‑by‑Step Instructions

  1. Observe the skeleton Look closely at the pig’s backbone and notice how it connects to the ribs and legs. Talk about how the backbone helps the pig stand tall and move.
  2. Identify the bones Point out the skull, ribs, legs, and tail bones. Ask: “Which bones help the pig walk? Which protect its heart and lungs?”
  3. Draw the skeleton On your paper, sketch the pig’s body outline first. Then lightly draw the bones inside — the backbone, ribs, and legs. Color gently with gray or white to show bone texture.
  4. Label the parts Write simple labels like “backbone,” “ribs,” “skull,” and “leg bones.”
  5. Share and discuss Let children show their drawings and talk about what they learned about bones.

💡 Fun Fact

Pigs have about 51 vertebrae in their backbone! That’s what helps them bend and move so easily.
