The Symbolism of Staffs in Biblical History

In ancient times, it was customary for every man to carry a staff—a large, straight stick used for traveling, walking, and recording information. Often, details were carved along the sides of the staff from top to bottom.

Abraham passed his staff to Isaac, who then gave it to Jacob. In Genesis 32:10, Jacob says, “With my staff I crossed over this Jordan…” This staff may have carried engravings of the family’s history and the covenant promises. Later, as Jacob was dying in Egypt, he leaned on the top of his staff and worshiped God.

  • Hebrew 11:21 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

Traditionally, the family staff would go to the firstborn, Reuben, but because Reuben dishonored his father, it was given instead to the fourth son, Judah (Gen. 49:10).

When the Israelites were given the instructions for how to eat the first Passover, the instructions included a staff.

  • Exodus 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s passover.

God wanted the Israelites to bring the staffs with the old inscriptions on them. He also wanted them handy to carve the new inscriptions.

Later in Scripture, when the Shunammite woman’s son dies, Elisha tells his servant Gehazi, “Lay my staff on the child’s face” (2 Kings 4:29). Since significant personal events could be recorded on the staff, Elijah likely noted the miraculous birth of this child (see 2 Kings 4:12–17).

When David faces Goliath, he brings his sling, five stones, and his staff (1 Sam. 17:40). He’s ready to mark his victory over Goliath on that wooden staff. Later, as a shepherd writing the twenty-third Psalm, David says, “Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me” (Ps. 23:4). This may refer to the Word of God given to him prophetically or to the idea that God’s promises are inscribed on his staff, reminding him that God is always with him.

When Jesus was preparing his disciples to send them out two by two, he gave them specific instructions.

  • Mark 7:8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:

Notice he said, “take nothing for their journey, save a staff only“. I believe that he was telling them take a staff so that you can record the major events.

Today, believers speak the written Word of God and call upon the blessings of the Almighty by reminding Him of His covenant promise.

  • Isaiah 43:25-26
    • I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.
    • Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.

The Significance of Mount Sinai in Biblical Prophecy

Israel reaches Mount Sinai and stays there for about a year (see Exod. 19:1 and Num. 10:11). During this time, Moses ascends and descends the mountain eight times, spending forty days there on two occasions. It’s here that Moses receives the Ten Commandments from God (Exod. 20). Exodus 19 is often seen as vivid imagery of the catching away of the saints, described by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, and identified by some as the Rapture. Moses receiving the Law on Mount Sinai serves as a powerful preview of Christ’s coming, as revealed in the New Testament.

Moses on Mount Sinai in Exodus 19The Rapture and Second Coming

The Two Periods of Jacob’s Trouble Explained

THE TIME OF JACOB’S TROUBLE

Jeremiah predicted a “time of Jacob’s trouble” for Israel.

  • Jeremiah 30:7 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he shall be saved out of it.

Many scholars think this term refers to the seven-year Tribulation, known as “Daniel’s last seven years” or “Daniel’s seventieth week,” mentioned in Daniel 9:27.

  • Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Jacob works for seven years, but when the time comes, his father-in-law tricks him into marrying Leah instead of his beloved Rachel. Laban then tells Jacob to “fulfill her week.”

  • Genesis 29:27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.

The Hebrew word for week is shabuwa, and is literally a week of years, not days.

  • Strong’s H7620
    • שָׁבוּעַ shâbûwaʻ, shaw-boo’-ah; or שָׁבֻעַ shâbuaʻ; also (feminine) שְׁבֻעָה shᵉbuʻâh; properly, passive participle of H7650 as a denominative of H7651; literally, sevened, i.e. a week (specifically, of years):—seven, week.

This word is found four times:

  • Genesis 29:27 & 28
    • Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
    • And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
  • Twice in Daniel 9:27
    • And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
      • The word week in Daniel 9:27 is a prediction of a seven-year covenant that the future Antichrist will sign.

Jacob’s trouble spans two periods of seven years. He worked the first seven years only to be deceived by Laban, then labored another seven years before finally marrying the wife he had chosen.

  • Some rabbis believe that the Jewish Holocaust, from 1938 to 1945—a span of seven years—was the fulfillment of Jacob’s trouble. However, Jacob experienced two distinct periods of “seven” in his life.
  • The upcoming seven-year Tribulation will mark the second and final period of seven years in Jacob’s (Israel’s) time of trouble.

After the second seven-year period, Jacob marries Rachel and eventually returns to the Promised Land, where he meets Esau and visits his father, Isaac. In the future, after a seven-year Tribulation, Christ the Messiah will return to Israel and reveal Himself as the suffering Messiah to the descendants of both Esau and Isaac.

  • Zechariah 13:6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
    • Jesus is the one with wounds in his hands.
      • John 20:25-27
        • The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
        • And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.
        • Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

The Ten Plagues: God’s Judgment on Egyptian Idols

TEN PLAGUES AGAINST TEN IDOLS

The 10 Plagues that occurred in Egypt was designed to prove to the Egyptians that God is the Lord.

  • Exodus 7:5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.

Each plague was designed to prove that the Egyptian gods have no power over the judgments of the Hebrew God.

Bible Studies: Lessons from People in Scripture

Studies about People in the Bible

We are able to learn many things when we study the life of people who has gone on before us. It is interesting to learn about how God was able to work in the lives of the various people. Remember those that don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. Below is a list of Bible Studies about various people. More will be added as time goes on. Bible studies about Jesus can be found here: Exploring the Life and Teachings of Jesus.

Biblical Insights on God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit

There is one God, who eternally exists in the GodHead.

  • Colossians 2:8-10
    • Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
    • For in him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
    • And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
  • 1 John 5:7
    • For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
  • John 1:1
    • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  •  Genesis 1:1-3
    • In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
    • And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
    • And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
      • Notice that God spoke and things were created. It was by God’s Word that everything was created.
  • John 1:3
    • All things were made by him (Jesus); and without him (Jesus) was not any thing made that was made.
  • John 1:14
    • And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

From the above verses it is clear that Jesus is the word of God. In the beginning God created the earth with His Word. Therefore, Jesus was there in the beginning with God and He was God. Later he became flesh.

  • 1 Timothy 3:16
    • And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

The Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) was there in the beginning as the Spirit of God.

  • Genesis 1:2
    • And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

The Holy Spirit works in many ways. Here is some Bible Studies on the Holy Spirit: Understanding the Holy Spirit: Key Teachings and Insights.

The Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and a voice spoke from heaven when Jesus was baptized.

  • Matthew 3:13-17
    • Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
    • But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
    • And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
    • And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
    • And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Remember that God is omnipresent.

  • Proverbs 15:3
    • The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.
  • Psalms 139:7-10
    • Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
    • If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
    • If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
    • Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Jesus is the Word that came out of God. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. They are all part of each other.

The Gift of Salvation: A Christian Perspective

Everyone has sinned and needs salvation. Salvation comes by grace through faith based on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

  • Romans 3:23-25
    • For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
  • Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
  • Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

A Reason to Live

A Reason to live

Philippians 1:21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

“To live is Christ”, is Paul’s reason for living. He is in a Roman prison, when he writes this letter to the people of Philippi. In Ancient Rome prisoners were not treated well. They were more or less left to die without food or water or feed to the lions. Unless resources were brought to the prison for them, they had nothing. Paul is writing this letter to the people of Philippi as a thank you note for sending a care basket.

There are times people today still struggle with living. It is important to remember that Jesus is our source of Joy. Jesus is a great reason to live. Until the work on earth that Jesus has called you to do is finished, it is necessary and essential for you to live.

For anyone who has every felt more than ready to go home to heaven, remember that Jesus hasn’t called you home yet because you still have work on earth to do. Your work may be something as simple as talking to others or it may be something more. Your reason for living is Jesus. Take joy in Jesus. Trust in Jesus. Get your strength from Jesus. Pray and ask Jesus what work it is that you need to do and then get busy doing it. Remember that even when it feels like no one sees and no one cares that Jesus does.

God’s Presence in Times of Trouble is a poem that may help you get through the bad times.

Understanding the Holy Spirit: Key Teachings and Insights

The Holy Spirit is often misunderstood. Here are some teachings about the Holy Spirit.

Here are some points to consider

Baptist involves water and the Holy Ghost. Baptism is the part of the new birth. Water Baptism is the public demonstration and acknowledgement of what has happened Spiritually.

  • Mark 1:6-8
    • And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
  • John 3:5-7
    • Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
    • That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
    • Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Understanding Jesus’ Birth: Traditions vs. Scripture

Many years ago, Jesus called me to teach His children to read. He wants His children to read His word with understanding and learn from it how they are supposed to behave. Sometimes I have loved teaching the Word of God. Other times I have not liked what was placed on my heart to teach. Sometimes I have had a hard time learning it myself. Those are the times when what I am reading does not line up with what has been traditionally taught. This is one of those times.

When, meaning the month of the year, was Jesus born? Tradition says December. Some teachers say around October while others say around April. People will say that the Bible does not tell us. The question is does the Bible really not say or have people been so caught up in tradition that no one notices what it really says.

Luke 1:26-27 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Now I have heard preachers explain away this by saying, “It means that Elizabeth was 6 months pregnant.” I have tried hard to believe that. However, that is not what it says. It says that in the 6th month the Angel Gabriel was sent from God.

Now the question is when according to God is the 6th month. In order to find the answer to that you first need to know when the 1st month is according to God. Thankfully, we are told that in the book of Exodus.

Exodus 12:1-6 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

This event is Passover. Passover takes place on 14th day of the 1st month on the Jewish calendar. Below is a simplified Jewish Calendar.

NameLength in a regular yearBiblical Month NumberCorresponding Month
Tishri  30  7Last of Sept or October
Heshvan  29  8Last of Oct or November
Kislev  30  9Last of Nov. or December
Tevet  29  10Last of December or January
Shevat  30  11Last of January or February
Adar I  30  12Last of February or March
  Nisan  30  1March or April
  Iyar  29  2Normally May
  Sivan  30  3June
Tammuz  29  4Last of June to July
Av  30  5Last of July to August
Elul  29  6Last of August to September

Notice that the 1st month corresponds to either March or April. Passover is normally close to Easter. Normally Easter is in April but sometimes it is in March. Now count forward to the 6th month. You come to around September.

That means that Gabriel came to her in what we would call September. Now for the hard part. Remember how long it takes for a baby to come to full term. (Hint 9 months). Count forward 9 months. You now come to around the month of June.

An interesting thing to note is that Pentecost is normally in the month of June. It was on the day of Pentecost that the Holy Spirit was poured out for all people.

Not everyone is ready for this revelation. Please do not take this information and start a fight. The most important things to remember are that:

  • Jesus was born.
  • Jesus lived a sinless life.
  • Jesus died on the cross.
  • Jesus rose again.
  • Jesus did all of this so that we could be reconciled to God through Jesus.
