Cooking with Kids: Simple Recipe Ideas

My 12 -year-old daughter loves to help me cook and has a passion for making desserts. She’s the main one in our house who prepares the sweets and also assists me in posting the recipes here. These recipes are some of her favorites to make. While they’re great for older kids, younger kids can also try them with a bit of adult supervision.

Cooking Secrets: Corn Starch vs. Flour

COOKING TIPS:

  • Corn starch mixes with cold water more easily than flour does, and will result in creamier, smoother gravies, sauces, stews and soups.
  • One tablespoon of corn starch equals 2 tablespoons of flour.
  • If recipe calls for flour, use half as much l corn starch to thicken it.
  • When thickening hot liquids, mix corn starch with a small
amount of cold water until smooth, then stir into hot liquid. Stir constantly until liquid comes to a boil. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, for about one minute.

Homemade Gravy

My Aunt gave me my grandmothers old cookbooks. 1 of the cookbooks is Quick Dishes for the woman in a hurry. In the cookbook it is called medium white sauce.

Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons of butter or margarine (shortening works fine too)
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • few grains pepper (I like a lot of black pepper in mine)
  • 1 cup of milk (water is a great substitute that I normally use)
Directions:
  1.  Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan over low heat.
  2. Blend in flour, salt, and pepper.
  3. Heat until mixture bubbles.
  4. Remove from heat and add milk (water) gradually.
  5. Cook rapidly, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens. (If it because too thick, add a little bit more water)
  6. Use for gravies and creamed mixtures.
